Introduction[edit]

Typically visited as a bushwalk, bypassing the 2 short slot canyon sections. The bottom of the valley is a lovely tree-fern filled gorge beneath tall cliffs.

Approach[edit]

Low clearance vehicles will need to park near the Glen Davis Rd at the bottom of the hill, while high clearance vehicles should be able to drive on to the plateau. There is a large open pull-off at the top of the Grotto. Walk up the graded fire trail to Genowlan Trig, then continue east down the overgrown fire trail to the head of the valley.

Descent[edit]

The first slot canyon section is within 50m which can be walked around.

- You can downclimb the first drop using tree and roots, or, hand-over-hand with a rope, less than 10m.
- Walk 15m then down-climb out of the slot.

Walk for a few hundred metres to the next slot section, which starts under a large boulder.

- The first drop is the hardest in the whole canyon, can be bridged by tall people, but at 5 foot 10 inches it's likely too wide to comfortably get your right foot on the far wall beneath the chockstone, best to use a rope, less than 10m with a convenient slim tree at the drop.
- Walk 10m to the next drop, carefully crouch and climb across to a ledge - there are pockets on the wall for your right fingers to offer some security and confidence as you transition (swing?) across. Down-climb dirty slippery ledges.
- Walk 5m and down-climb out of the slot.

Walk 100-200m and enter a shallow fern-filled canyon. Pushing through the ferns you'll suddenly find an overhanging drop.

- Back-up 30-50m, scramble up to a ledge on the true-left (left facing down canyon), walk the ledge until past the drop, scramble down some ledges to find a 45-degree slab with good friction, you'll likely find a fixed-rope in-place which you should use, but this slab has been climbed up and down without the use of a rope.

Continue down-canyon through a lovely gorge for a few hundred metres. When the creek gets scrubby, it's best to contour on the right side to the ridge line, then walk down the ridge and out to the fire trail below.

Exit[edit]

Follow the fire trail west then south back to your car.

It's definitely worth visiting the bottom of the Grotto on the way, and the Ultimate Slot, possibly the Valley of the Dinosaurs too.
