Introduction[edit]

World Heritage listed, world famous, Petra. The canyon is an easy walk along a concrete floor descending gradually through high-walled narrows to the amazing Treasury, an impressive building sculpted from the sandstone. One day isn't enough, you can easilly spend a worthwhile 3 days exploring the whole Petra site and walking through the Siq multiple times.

Approach[edit]

Travel to the town of Wadi Musa and follow signs to Petra which lead to the visitor centre. You'll need to obtain a ticket to enter.

From the ticket checking point, it's about 1km gradual downhill walk along a dirt road. As soon as you leave the ticket checking point, you'll immediately be approached by lots of people offering you a "taxi ride" on a donkey for the 1km. It's also possible to buy a golf cart ride.

Descent[edit]

Simply walk down the canyon on a concrete floor. The unique canyon dangers to Petra are: don't get hit by a golf cart, don't get aborbed into a group.

  • Concrete floor
  • Groups and Golf Carts
  • The Treasury and cafe
  • Exit[edit]

You should definitely budget more time to visit the rest of the Petra site over 2 or 3 days. Most people return to Wadi Musa by walking back up the siq, however, there are other canyon options away from the crowds.

    Red tape[edit]

You must purchase a day pass to enter the Petra site. In Jan 2026 the fees are (https://www.visitpetra.jo/en/Petrafees):

    • 1 day = 50 JOD
    • 2 days = 55 JOD
    • 3 days = 60 JOD
    • Discounts for Arabs, Jordan residents and Jordanians.

    Background[edit]

Petra was founded by the Nabataeans, an Arab people, around the 4th century BCE, becoming their capital and a thriving trade hub for centuries, with major structures like the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) built in the 1st century AD, though its decline began after Roman annexation in 106 AD and devastating earthquakes.
