Introduction[edit]

Anirgui Canyon, named for the town at the start, is a canyon in the Anti-Atlas Mountains that generally has water. If going in winter or spring, the only recommended times, the water will likely be flowing. The canyon has a moderate approach, all bolted anchors, and a short exit. The crux is probably the drive up the crazy road to the parking area! Make sure you are an excellent driver and your car's brakes are in excellent shape - the road, while paved, is narrow, windy and exposed.

  • Part of the crazy road to reach the parking area
  • Approach[edit]

From the parking area, follow the GPS track up the canyon, tracking up the hill on a decent trail. This will take you up a steep gully for about 25 minutes. From the saddle, head down to the obvious canyon and the first rappel. Following the GPS track is essential here.

  • The parking area
  • Near the start of the trail
  • The gully that the trail winds up
  • Looking back down the gully
  • Descending from the saddle to the canyon
  • Descent[edit]

At the first narrow part of the canyon, there will be several pairs of bolts. It's easy to pass these by a downclimb on the left. Then there is a rappel of about 30m off two bolts on the left. This rappel goes into a pool. This can also be bypassed by a very exposed traverse on the right - a fall here would be fatal.

  • The 'rappel' before the 30m rappel - bypassable by a downclimb on the right
  • The canyon then opens for 20 minutes of walking and boulder-hopping. Then it slots up again. There is first a 22-meter rappel into a swimming pothole, the a 20-meter rappel down a trickling waterfall.

  • 22-meter rappel
  • 20-meter rappel
  • 20-meter rappel from the bottom
  • After some more walking, it's a 10-meter rappel into another big pool. This pool, with care, can be bypassed by climbing up and over its left side.

  • Pothole in October. In winter and spring, the water is clean and generally flowing
  • After this, there are immediately two potholes before a 7-meter rappel from bolts on the left.

Soon after, there is a 15-meter sloping rappel through two possible pools and a waterfall.

  • 15-meter sloping rappel
  • The canyon then becomes a boulder-filled gully and ends.

  • Boulder-filled gully
  • Exit[edit]

From after the last rappel, boulder-hop downcanyon for 10-15 minutes, then exit on canyon left and follow the trail you started on back to the parking area.

    Background[edit]

The first descent party (French? 2010s?) added on a 60 meter rappel below the parking area. This rappel adds on significant walking and a difficult exit, as well as requiring much more rope. It is not mandatory, nor recommended.
