Introduction[edit]
"Barroso is one of the best canyons in the world, we can say this head-on. Of course we have not been to all the canyons in the world, but we have been to some widely recognized as the best, and Barroso takes his place among them with full confidence. The “Jurassic Park” style views from its head, a very mighty initial waterfall of 150 meters that sculpts an impressive and dark canyon in eternal shadow, where the winds howl up to 90 km / h and the noise is monstrously deafening. It is a very short route (less than 300 linear meters), but its high technical level and strong flow require efficient and capable team dynamics." --Toros Canyoning Group
Approach[edit]
Contact the Toros Canyoning Group directly to confirm the latest conditions for this route. The approach requires a very hefty bush wack. A machete is a strong recommendation
There is a new approach that took us two hours and 26 minutes from the car to the river. Just ask the locals how to find it, it’s also on Wikiloc (beta link below). You will park at damn gate and walk past gate several minutes until heading up steep trail to the right. You’ll still need a machete and it is extremely hard to stay on track. The very annoying bushwhack is made up for an incredible couple hundred yards of canyon.
Descent[edit]
Go to the Toros Canyoning Group beta (link below).
The first rap is a single bolt down Canyon left, I would recommend backing that up with one of the boulders or a meat anchor, it is a short, maybe 7 m rap slightly to down Canyon left where an anchor with two bolts is located. This is the 100 m free hanging rap, absolutely beautiful view, you will rap then be on a ledge and can safely give a firemans belay. From that ledge, you have two options, we opted to use the 2 bolt anchor down the plumb line of the previous rap, this puts you very near the large hydraulic of the 150 m waterfall, you can rap into the water, this would be quite dangerous, we opted to go slightly rapellers right where you are completely out of danger. The other option to escape the ledge can be found on the Toros Canyon website, on the large ledge after the hundred meter repel, you can walk down canyon left to a small spring where the first decent team repelled. Next, you’ll encounter hydraulic, which originally was passed by a jump, however as of January 2024 there was a lot of trees there, making the jump impossible. We then rappelled off of a single bolt and entered the water safely downstream of the hydraulic. Next is a very fun five bolt tension traverse where you will install a hand line. Please use standard canyon technique, passing the rope through the quick links, and not just using rock climber technique, which would expose a follower to a nasty, pendulum fall, as you have to traverse on very slippery moss. Then reach an anchor station, first person should rap down to a extremely convenient boulder which prevents you from directly entering the hydraulic. this first person down should be a very strong swimmer who will jump and swim out of the hydraulic. And then they can set up either a meat anchor guided rap, or make a natural anchor on one of the boulders for a guided rap, so the rest the team can safely avoid the hydraulic.
Exit[edit]
If you parked your car at pozo azul follow rio toro to the pozo azul waterfall and take the trail back to your car.If you have left your car on the power company road make your way to the bridge and hike up the road
Red tape[edit]
The canyon exit on the road is considered trespassing on power company property, although many tourists hike down the road anyway to view the waterfalls. The exit out to pozo azul is longer but legal.
