Introduction[edit]

Boca del Salto is an impressive canyon characterized by its dark rock formations, lush greenery, and big rappels. While the approach to the canyon is relatively easy, the exit can be challenging and demands significant bushwhacking. Navigating this canyon requires advanced techniques and knowledge, making it unsuitable for beginners.

Approach[edit]

The approach hike follows an old logging road that is partially overgrown. After 0.2 miles, you will pass through an old metal gate and continue along a beautiful grassy road.

Beyond the gate, the road descends further. At 0.8 miles, you will see an outdoor restaurant pavilion on your right. Keep going down the road toward the creek. You'll come across some structures in the area, including a few apparent homes. Be aware that a medium-sized white dog may run after you, barking.

Continue down the road until it ends, at which point the trail becomes overgrown. Enter the creek around coordinates (20.35969, -98.31531) after hiking for approximately 30 minutes and a total of one mile. A large flat rock in the middle of the creek is an excellent spot for suiting up. Now let the fun begin!

Descent[edit]

Boca del Salto - Part 1

Spectacular, with multiple large waterfalls, dark rock formations, and beautiful greenery!

‘’’R1:’’’ three trees DCL, 40’ retrievable, into a large shallow pool

Creek-walk down a mostly wide, flat, shallow creek about 15 minutes past an old logging tent constructed from a white plastic tarp.

R2 - 25 feet DCR bolt

R3- 75 feet DCL bolt

R4 - 40 feet DCL bolt

R5 - 100 feet DCL two stages from the single anchor, a lower pool followed by a more significant drop

Following R5, a giant log jam was slippery and difficult to climb around.

R6 - 90 feet DCR two bolts

Rappel down to a large platform, then traverse DCL, crossing the water flow while still on rappel to the next anchor station.

R7 - 100 feet DCL two bolts

Boca del Salto - Part 2

Continue down the creek. Slippery creek walking and several small down climbs.

R1 - 7 feet from a tree

R2 - 60 feet into a large pool DCL one bolt The second bolt is missing a hanger

R3 - 35 feet Two bolts on the center of a large boulder

R4 - 40 feet into a large pool DCR two bolts

The following section is a down climb, although there is a bolt DCR if desired.

After some creek walking, several more down climbs through multiple small cascades. Some can be avoided easily DCR.

R5 - 12 feet DCL two bolts There are additional bolts at the edge of the ledge, too

R6 - 60 feet DCL with deviation DCR

R7 - 60 feet

R8 - 220 feet to shelf DLR

After the grand finale, there are several significant down climbs. The most significant can be avoided by down climbing DCL.

Exit[edit]

Exit DCR at 20.3707, -98.3095, not before. After the big final rappel, downclimb in and along the watercourse descending 250 feet in elevation until you are below 6,000 feet. It is slightly taxing on slippery moss covered boulders but you must fight the urge to exit right any sooner or you will be setting yourselves up to cross down and up several deep ravines. At the waypoint just below 6,000 feet scramble up canyon right on an East-Southeast heading. You need to gain 500 feet.
