Introduction[edit]
A classic slotty watercourse canyon with a bit of nice sculpting. When flowing, this canyon is described as a “mini Kolob”.
Approach[edit]
Park at West Rim Access. The road beyond is gated. One must hike the remaining dirt road to a turn off then follow overgrown trails through the woods to the drainage.
Descent[edit]
R1: 60’ off tree at the head of the watercourse.
R2: 100’ off bolts Canyon Right.
R3: 50’ off log in the watercourse. Use caution if combining R2 and R3, as your rope may fall onto the first stage and become stuck around the logs.
R4: 40’ off log in the watercourse.
R5: 30’ off bolts Canyon Right.
R6: 100’ off bolts Canyon Left down to an arch and pool.
R7: 80’ off bolts Canyon Left (two stage).
R8: 100’ off log in the watercourse down a chute.
R9: 50’ off log in the watercourse.
R10: 50’ off bolts Canyon Left out of the slot / technical section.
Exit[edit]
The typical exit has you follow the creek down to the confluence with Kolob. From there, continue down to the MIA exit trail.
'Sneak Exit'
There is a sneak exit that has been around for some time; it has now just been discovered by RopeWiki authors. Roughly 500’ down-canyon after the last rap there is a drainage that can be climbed. Climbing out will put you at the top of a saddle from which you can then hike back to R1 and retrace your steps. Occasionally, there are fixed ropes that require ascenders, but do not depend on these being there; winters are extremely tough in this area. If you are bent on exiting via the Sneak Exit, you should walk down the gully(from R1) and fix your own ropes. Canyoneers should use the exit ropes with an ascender and beware of loose rocks while climbing. The Express Exit is already seeing heavy erosion from foot traffic up the steep slope- while convenient, it's not the best option for LNT.
The start of the cut-in trail for this exit is here: 37.39419, -112.99597
Top of gulley is here: 37.39432, -112.99819
Red tape[edit]
Access to this area requires a permit from the LDS Church.
The MIA exit is on land owned by the LDS Church. Email them at [email protected] to obtain and complete the required paperwork.
Alternatively, exiting down Kolob to the Narrows will require a Narrows day-use permit and perhaps also a Kolob Canyon camping permit, depending if (and where) you plan to camp.
