Introduction
A short and delightfully aesthetic loop route down a well hidden slot in the Loy/Hartwell Canyon area. Car to car, a fast group could easily finish in two hours or less. For beginners or those unfamiliar with the area it offers a typical burly approach, an abundance of aggressive flora, wildly characterful Coconino sandstone and comes with a side of exposure.
Approach
From the parking area, take the network of social trails to the same gully used to approach End of the Rope and Hung Out to Dry staying UCL on your way up until you reach some recent rockfall/breakdown. Near the bottom of the breakdown make your way UCR and out of the gully to begin contouring south on a social trail with the canyon wall to your left. Take this about 50 yards and there will be an easy UP climb to scramble up onto the slick rock. (If you get to the wall that looks like zebra striping on your left & a sketchy cliffed out part that goes around a corner, DO NOT ATTEMPT! You went too far!! Turn around about 100’ and follow the EASY UP-climb). Follow the social trail here right and then left above the prickly pear cactus patch. When you get to the portion where there is slick rock in front of you leading down slightly with beautiful views. R1 is LDC from you. Scramble down here in the gully about 30 feet until you come to a little 4th class climbing. RDC will be a bit of a crack and easily negotiated down. In the center there is also a negotiable down-climb but you’ll take a bit of spikes of agave to the hip. Continue down canyon left and you will see a pine tree with the first Rappel. The Banner Photo is reference of the view from R1.
Descent
R1: 120' - From the shady alcove a large pine tree near the center anchored high and routed towards a small juniper at lip of the edge will provide a clean free-hanging rap down to another alcove.
From here, you'll have a great view west where the slot opens up to views of Loy Canyon and Sycamore Pass.
R2: 60' - From the cozy alcove, continue DCR to the lowest accessible ledge and bolted anchor. The ledge is mildly exposed, but the downclimb is short and easy.
Very possible to combine R1 and R2 for one 180' rappel with great pull angle.
Exit
From the bottom of the last rap head directly to the opposite canyon wall, DCL. Hug the wall heading down the gully staying above the thick foliage. After a short downclimb continue trending down and staying left, eventually landing you in the approach gully. This way is infinitely better than the original exit.
At the approach gully, cut across the drainage to find the good social trail which runs DCR, then out to a network of trails which will take you back to the parking area.
