Introduction[edit]

This canyon is located about 1 hour NE of Guadalajara and is a tributary to the beautiful Rio Verde. The entrance rappel is the only big one at 97m, then followed by a series of 21 more short rappels, downclimbs, jumps and slides. It has yet to be done with any water flow, so unknown how nice (or not) it is.

Approach[edit]

From Guadalajara one takes the autopista to the turn off into Zapotlanejo, and then follows the free road to the north, turning off to get to the town of La Purisima. One skips this town on the right, and then at the top of the hill leave on the left and follow the dirt roads to the parking area.

Descent[edit]

R1 is the only really challenging rappel at 97m, and needing a short rappel off trees to get to the anchors just over the edge. The rest are mainly done off trees. See details in map below.

Exit[edit]

One follows a narrow trail that is close to arroyo at the bottom on the west side, and then after crossing over the arroyo just above R21, moves away onto a very steep ridge (which literally has steps cut into the rock in one place), and which eventually finds the one breach in the upper cliff band to gain the farm fields above. Follow around the edge of the fields, before finding the road and getting back to the car. A good 2 hour hike back up.

Red tape[edit]

Access and exit are across private lands, so one should ask permission of the landowner(s) before going in.
