Introduction[edit]
This full day canyon is located about 20 minutes NW of the town of Tequila and has at least some water flow all year, making it a good option for dry season trips. It is not technically difficult with only 10 rappels (up to 32m) but has lots of jumps (many into shallow water) and once committed past the first rappel it is a long way to the finish. The hike back up is an hour plus, and can be very hot in May with temps in the high 30 degrees Celcius range. Once in the mid part of the canyon the view up at the 400m high canyon walls is quite impressive.
Approach[edit]
From the town of Tequila follow the highway to the NW and turn off to the town of Santa Teresa. Drive thru town and continue on a dirt road that shortly crosses over the arroyo and continues along on the west side. Leave people to change at the upper parking spot, while taking a truck down to the village of El Oro. From the upper parking spot, walk back down the road a short ways to a horse trail that heads down the slope and crosses the arroyo. It is about 200m down the arroyo to the first rappel, though people will want to change before for a couple of short swims before the rappel.

Exit[edit]
After the last cascade of 32m, there is a couple 100m of hiking over very large boulders before getting the flats beside the Rio Santiago. The return trail is located immediately on the left and goes up the crest of the ridge. It is about 1 hour up the vehicle, and if done in the high temps of May it is advisable to soak your clothing in the water just before hiking up to help stay cool and avoid heat stroke.
