Introduction[edit]
This canyon is located in a beautiful protected cloud forest in the Sierra de Quila about 2 hours south of Guadalajara and has water all year round and can be done in the rainy season as the full forest cover blunts flooding. The highlight of this canyon is the main cascade, El Salto Seco, which combines R1 thru R4b in essentially one large cascade.
Approach[edit]
Take the main highway south out of Guadalajara, and take the route that goes to the town of Tecolotlan. From there take the cobblestone road that goes west up to the town of Quila for 14.8km to a left turn. Enter here and continue 800m till coming to a stream crossing, which is Arroyo de la Campana. Leave the car there, and cross the stream and hike up and over to the SW, to drop into the next drainage. Then just follow the stream down to the first cascade.
Descent[edit]
R1 - 13m – 2 bolts r. - initial ramp
R2 - 25m – 2 bolts der. (Note: no footing here)
R3 - 55m -2 bolts r. (the ledge here easily fits 6 people)
R4a - 10m – 1 bolt der. – a ramp
R4b - 26m – 2 bolts der. (Note: there is no footing here)
R5 – 14m
R6 - 9m
Exit[edit]
After R4b, most people cut out on the left and bushwack up to the top of the ridge and back to the car. Or one can do the next two short rappels and hike 1.8km further downstream until passing an old aqueduct where you can then cut out on the left and hike back up to the top of the ridge and and then back to the car.
