Comment: Morning light this time of year made for some stellar summit views. Edge protection was fixed at R2. Removed some junk webbing from R3.

Comment: Anchors looked fine. We downclimbed from r0 to the first anchor. 4 rappels total. We removed an extra anchor between r3 and r4. R3 continues down slot and is under 100'.
Taking our time on the approach ( 3 hours ) route (1 hour) exit (1 hr)

Comment: Very fun and engaging route. Lots to see on the approach, lots of 4th class scrambling, super fun! Quite a few key spots on approach that will leave beginners questioning if they are on the right track. (These spots are some of the most fun!) I really enjoy all the little “airy” problems you negotiate on approach! The descent is short with high quality free hang raps on after another. Descent all in the shade. Spent time teaching and enjoying at a leisurely pace. If you havent done it, it’s a must-do!

Comment: Approach so fun. Still couldn't bring myself to do the airy step. It's a pretty easy class 5 move to get up the shelf in the center of the ridge instead. Didn't love the traverse to R1 anchor so downclimbed from directly above it, which was easy. Less than an hour for the tech portion. All anchors looking fine. Started at 3 and was back to the car just after sunset. Indeed a beautiful route with some sweet raps and nice fall colors in the oak-filled exit drainage.

Comment: Beautiful evening canyon. Started at 4pm. Approach up slickrock is fun and picturesque the whole way. Lots to see! Take care downclimbing to the 1st anchor, very slick, high angle downclimb. The rappels are all high quality! Very pretty, each free hanging into alcoves, one after another. I think I like this route slightly better than Boynton East. Back to the truck at 8pm.

Comment: Time reflects Boynton Island West, Subway for lunch, and Chopper drop.
Starting with BIW provided cool Temps on the exposed approach. Chopper drop approach was straightforward. All anchors looked good.

Comment: Fun and scrambley approach, class 4 not 5, slight exposure on 1 or 2 moves.
There is an additional anchor above R1 which caused us a little bit of confusion, can by used to bypass downclimb to R1 but not necessary. Careful going too far LDC on R1 or it'll swing you All anchors in perfect condition Great day for it!

Comment: It was a beautiful day in Sedona! I was able to take a group of friends from work to do their first canyon. These guys are experienced with technical rescue and rappelling but hadn't done any canyoneering. They crushed it and had a great time. All anchors were in good shape, no issues with rope pull. Time was car to car. We stopped frequently so these guys could enjoy the views, ruins, etc. Overall it was a great day! They are hooked and are already planning their next trip.

Comment: Excellent route! My wife led this route and set up all rigging, etc. She crushed it for her first time leading! Super proud. We didn't get lost and she got us to each rap without any issues. It was very cold today and the west side was all shade. We saw another party following behind us. They must have been headed to the east route.
Someone set webbing on a large pine tree approximately 70 feet above the first rap. This area is an easy down climb and it's not necessary to rap. It threw us off for a bit. Each rap was fun and all webbing was in great shape. We used rope protection on the sharp edge at rap 2. It's really not that bad. We got back to the main trail in about 3.5 hours so we decided to head over to Slingshot and run it again. Total time was from car to car and included both Boynton Island West and Slingshot. Great job to the route setters! We definitely recommend and will be back. | |||||||

Comment: Sharp edge on r2 should be protected, or adjusted between each rappel.
On the ridge downclimb step LDC onto large block. Challenging for beginners but fun. Earn it.

Comment: Special challenges are the on the approach and listed in the beta.
BOULDER on the ridge downclimb (2nd step) does move I stepped on the right side. Take caution on the exposed ridge downclimb. One member of our team opted for for jump across on the ridge. Some backpack strap webbing was removed from a tree above r1. The traverse to the r1 anchor is much safer than it appears, just slightly exposed.

Comment: Very enjoyable first time on this route. Some great views and rappels. A bit of route-finding, but not too bad. The KML is pretty much spot on. As noted in the beta, there are a couple of exposed moves on the approach.

Comment: Time is doing West Boynton Canyon, Chopper Drop, then Mushroom Drops combined in one outing. West Boynton Canyon fair amount of light climbing and one exposed step up top. Very interesting canyon. Light trickle of water, may get a little wet. Quite an adventure both approach and descent.

Comment: This a great canyon for those that like challenging approaches. The views an alcoves are awesome and the rappels do not disappoint. We had some challenges getting to the first rappel. So with that said, we rigged a rap of a large tree directly above anchor 1. Because of the approach I would say this is better for a smaller group. Lastly, heed the PG rating this has attached to it.
