Comments: After bailing out on Barnhardt due to too much flow we still wanted to do something and checked out Cane Springs on the way home. It turned into good albeit strange adventure. The current beta leads you into in and out route. You boulder hop up stream, scramble around obstacles until you get to the big, final wall which is the first rappel. At this point we felt we "conquered" the canyon and obviously if you can make it to this point you can retrace your steps and bypass/downclimb everything so there are no mandatory rappels. We were lucky to caught it at the highest flow this canyon can possibly see and it was really good. Not having our wetsuits with us and not feeling like getting wet we ended up...hiking instead of canyoneering. This canyon would make much more sense with different approach. From the parking lot I would try to gain the ridge on either side, high above canyon floor and try to drop back down after the big wall, then forget about the fact that everything is passable and turn every obstacle into raps. And with the flow we encountered it would be fantastic outing.

Comment: My vehicle wasn't broken down...but decided to check out Cane Spring Canyon anyways.

Definitely rugged. Plenty of thrashing through brush and scrambling along the approach as you ascend the canyon. There were 2 or 3 class IV climbs required to navigate around some of the rappels - hence the difficulty rating.

R1 webbing is getting crispy and should be replaced soon. The water knot at R2 looked like it had been purposefully cut. I replaced the webbing and packed out the junk anchor material. R3 anchor was solid and webbing was in fine shape. There was a black rattlesnake coiled up in a rock nook at the base of this rappel about three feet from where my rope bag landed.

I added a 4th rappel at the first major obstacle of the canyon that avoids an exposed, advanced downclimb. Most people would probably hesitate climbing up the section, never mind down it. Details for this rappel have been added to the main page.

It would be nice if there was an alternative approach that didn't ascend the canyon. Maybe taking a separate drainage off FR 177, or descending from above via FR 191?
