Comments: Great day to run this canyon. Many rappels with very short walks in between rappels. All raps are dry and fairly short making this great for beginners. We started around 815 am and were back around 115 pm at the cars. We took the standard route and did all 14 rappels. The first few rappels of the standard route can be down climbed which some members of the group opted to do. The most notable part of the canyon is the bamboo forest which currently was not hard to walk through (previous parties probably did some great gardening here). We replaced one piece of red webbing around a bush but other than that all webbing is in great condition. Another highlight was also finding a geocache after R3 which was put there in February of this year. We didn’t have a pen to sign it so I’ll have to bring one next time I make a trip there.

Comment: This is a not to difficult and very well maintained canyon. The trails throughout are well tread and easy to follow. Since it was the weekend there were a ton of hikers out but we got there early enough where finding a parking spot wasn’t too challenging. We took the alternate approach trail which was a little steep but nothing too bad. The trails throughout the canyon were well tread and all the anchors seemed solid. It took us six hours since we had to instruct some newer peeps but the canyon could definitely be done much faster.

Comment: Given the recent work on cleaning up the brush, a cool morning, and a little drizzle last nigh, this quick run of Extended Coyote Left Fork was great! I used Walnut Canyon and the Henninger Express trail to climb all the way up in 49 minutes; it's much shorter but steep. All the anchor webbing is in good shape.

Comment: I spent over over an hour pruning (special challenges) the extended run on this chilly and foggy morning. At the 3rd bench, I took a 20 minute phone call. The lower canyon was good brush wise, except for the bamboo, which I busted up a bit more.

Comment: Coyote Left Fork is pretty clean with a few sections a bit overgrown. All the longer two stage rappels have anchors in the middle now so you can get through the whole canyon with a 120' rope. Willie added a bolt w/ backup on the last rappel that traditionally needed a 200' rope to traverse. All the anchors are still in good shape and I had no issues with any of them.
I did some gardening to trim back the bushes but the bamboo section is still pretty in your face. There are a lot of poison oak bushes throughout the canyon and their leaves are all over the floor. If you are allergic to PO, you might want to wear long sleeves/pants and bring some PO wipes.

Comment: The hike up was quite warm in the early afternoon even with muted Sun from high cirrus clouds. Canyon was totally dry except for some dampness on one rappel mid canyon (see pic). Watch out for the poison oak as the leaves are coming out in force now! The final rappel has been split with massive new bolt and ring hanger backed up to an old bolt.

Comment: Thing with daylight savings is that you can do a quick canyon after work and the sun is still out!
Ran coyote LF quickly today (40 min hike from pinecrest, 1:20 technical, 35 min hike out). All anchors were in good shape. The 2 stage rappels are split now with anchors in the middle but I'm not confident in that rock cairn :) (see attached). Coyote LF is a lot of fun with all the back to back rappels and minimal slogging between. Only thing to watch out for is ticks! I don't know when someone ran Coyote last but the ticks are hungry. I had to remove ~12 of them off my pants towards the bottom 1/3 of the canyon. Keep on checking!

Comment: I was planning on an Eaton run, but one member of our large Eaton group was not feeling well on the hike up, so we split the Eaton group and 3 of us did extended Left Fork Coyote. We accessed the old nature trail on the South side of the Henninger flats big building. We took our time going down and rarely leap-frogged ropes. This slow pace worked out nicely for me as I was able to hike up Eaton and catch the Eaton group at the last rappel.

Comment: I used the Henninger express trail to climb up which took 1.0 hours from Roosevelt. I located the old Henninger nature trail with its green numbered posts (near the Henninger building) and dropped into the canyon near post #4. I spent a lot of extra time busting up deadfall in the extended (top) section of Coyote (special challenges) and installed a couple webbing anchors. I ghosted one other drop, which is a bit sketchy downclimbing. There are 2 other downclimbs. Overall, extended Left Fork Coyote is now worth doing after spending 1.5 hours fixing it up. From the 3rd bench down (Standard run) to the bottom of the last rappel only took 1.5 hours, since I was not working on clearing brush.

Comment: I finally got around to the extended run! :) I hiked from Midwick/Roosevelt up Walnut trail, and up the Henninger express trail to the big water tank in just under 1 hour. I dropped into the extended run using a gulley on the West side at 34.19253, -118.09090. The brush was pretty thick, but much is deadfall and it's easy to break up (special challenges). Once in the main fork, it also has / had a lot of deadfall, but with limited time (already 4PM), I only broke up what I needed to get through, often ducking under the thick stuff. There is one main rappel, nicely covered in moss (see pic), and a couple shorter rappels and a couple more downclimbs. The extended part took a mere 30 minutes to bench 3, even breaking through all the brush. Overall it's a nice extension to the normal full run, and with some work on the brush it will be worthwhile run for most everyone.

Comment: We hiked from Roosevelt and did the normal run from the 3rd bench. All the brush is clear in the canyon and with the recent rains knocking down the dust and plant seeds, Coyote is in great condition. We built a rock cairn anchor to split R9 just for an exercise; the rock cairn is not the strongest; use with care!

Comment: This was a sneak Coyote run before another canyon, so I don't know about R0-R6. For the sneak run, the canyon and anchors are in excellent shape allowing for an easy run of 1:20 down the technical section.

Comment: We took a group to the short cut drop in. All webbing looked good except the drop in webbing. We chose to body belay the group and last man scramble down. We had a great time in the bamboo maze. First time down this canyon but not my last.
