Comments: Pg rating not applicable as the 4th class Crack and exposed ridge can be bypassed. Views are good but hey that's Sedona, nearby deadmans descent offers the same views with a better quality canyon and less effort to access.
Took the kings Cave approach to the Coconino layer above the canyon. Added a r1 from the Coconino LDC off pine 65 feet. The 250 rappel is anchored off a pine far on the left side. We moved it up higher in the tree for a better dismount and pull. Cool rappel. We left the watercourse after the big rappel on the right side staying up against the cliff. It was about 20 Minutes with little to no bushwhacking to Lower kings Cave. We exited via the last 3 rapps on kings Cave and were back on Boynton trail.

Comment: We bounced (rappelled/ascended) the first two drops on our way over to King’s Cave. This ended up being a super fun and worthwhile side quest! Pretty bushy between the 1st 70’ and the 250’. (We started at the head of the drainage instead of downclimbing the loose slope). The 250’ was incredible! Largest alcove Ive seen in Sedona! Very wide! In my opinion, there should be bolts in the watercourse, the tree that is rigged for the 250’ is way out of the watercourse DCL and is a bad start. I also suspect the dree hang wouldnt be as dramatic, looking back up at it… We extended our rappel 100’ back, off a tree in the watercourse. Using a stone knot centered on a 200’ rope we tied our 250’ and 240’ on either end and made it down in tandem no problem. Easy to see this is the prime rappel location! Very fun rappel and ascend definitely a worthwhile side quest for the confident ascender or caver! Added about 2hrs to our day.

Comment: We traversed the lower red rock layer straight to the big rappel and were able to bypass R0 in the white rock layer. There is a faint trail that will take you right above the big rappel anchor. This time our goal was to retrieve a rope that was stuck 2 days prior, so we took the bushwhack exit through the notch and down the main gully. It sucked but saved us some time. I think the most enjoyable way to finish this route is with the lower Kings Cave rappels. The anchor was new and, the pull was super smooth.
