Comments: Descended the canyon to the river directly with ropes, ascending on the way out in 10.5 hours car to car. Used ropes for each fall but the last chockstone drop since I ran out of rope, the bypass around this last drop really is quite easy, though. Light, cold flow in Hance Creek - wading to knee deep only. Set all anchors and retrieved them on the way out - plenty of good material for anchor construction. Don't let the relatively short time make you think getting this route done in a day is easy - it isn't. I was moving quickly and efficiently and only took one break in the day - and with a party of one there are no bottlenecks at the vertical obstacles. Most groups would prefer two days to complete this trip - if doing so I really wouldn't recommend camping at the river as there is so little space to set up. There are a few really nice campsites right where you drop into the creek from the trail.

Comment: Extremely hot down in the canyon this time of year, as expected. Took the bypasses rather than going direct, and found them absolutely horrendous in every way imaginable. If I was to repeat this canyon (I likely won't) then I would absolutely take rope and build anchors for the several small nuisance drops. Given the effort required, I found Hance to have few, if any, redeeming qualities. Fortunately, Grandview trail is beautiful.

Comment: Flowing water in the upper third or so of Hance only.
Hiked all the bypasses. The second (of three) is probably the most annoying. Checked out Page Springs and the remnants of a stone structure on Horseshoe Mesa on the return trip.
