Comment: With @eshi-1
Dropped in midway between the top and the sneak path. Lots of bushwhacking, gardening, and trail cleanup throughout the canyon. The canyon is actually pretty nice now with all the work we put in. Replaced R0 anchor and webbing. The others looked good still. Did R5 in two stages, 140 + 160. 1st stage had an tree anchor with a long webbing attached. Second stage had bolts and webbing per @eshi-1 comments earlier. The canyon has poison oak dispersed throughout so be careful. Lots of loose rocks. Don't bunch up and give each other plenty of space. It was a tiring day but the last rappel was worth it. Neighbor bordering the debris basin seemed upset that people were hiking in it to exit.

Comment: I was going to edit the main page (lots of old/wrong beta), but decided to write here instead.
The "sneak" drop in - So loose and steep we ended up rappelling the bottom half of it from some trees. I suggest you do the same. The canyon: R1 - Unknown. Skipped via "sneak" shortcut After shortcut drop-in: 3 Downclimbs of 5' each R2 - 20' Small bush LDC R3 - 100' We easily all downclimbed it. Rappel if you feel more comfortable R4 - 40' Bush LDC 10' Downclimb 15' Downclimb R5 - 300' - I highly recommend you DO NOT try to do it all at once. loose falling rocks. Rope drag and herd pull. Etc. Instead: R5A - 140' Anchor changed from tree RDC to tree LDC. Better angle for the rappel and the rope pull R5B - 160' Tree 15' up from the ledge - Check anchor and replace if needed while on rappel of R5A! 10' Dirt slide 25' Steel Ladder on debris dam

Comment: The shortcut drop in is terrible. Needs to be replace with something better.
The canyon can be improved greatly with some cleanup. Replaced all anchor webbing on 3/13/2022 The big rappel can and should be divided to 2 - 140 + 160. There's plenty room on the middle ledge for a group of 10. Ledge: 1. Removed old, rusty, loose and unnecessary pitons. 2. There's a good anchor from a bush but it's 15' up the wall. Check it on rappel and replace if needed while rappelling the 130'.

Comment: Good day to do a canyon with the cool weather. Despite all the rain there was no water in the canyon; some slightly spicy downclimbs given the chossy rock but easy going. We counted 4 rappels (including splitting r5) for the route; be very careful on the second half of r5 with the pitons and rope given the loooong rope extension and also the crumbly rock hazards. Very loose at the drop in to the canyon as well.

Comment: Hiker Bob is a surprisingly good time for such a seldom-run canyon. It was mostly clear of brush with some nice grassy patches; perhaps it was cleared out by recent rains. I did one rappel prior to the two-pitch main event, for a total of three raps. Anchors were in decent condition with good pulls. Easy exit with very little brush.

Comment: Time was from sign at first switchback back to car at Bailey Park, as I did Bailey before Hiker Bob. All the anchors are still intact from my previous runs. Pictured are the very old pitons with new webbing. The path through the canyon is mostly clear, just a couple small dead-fall tree that fell in the past few months. I also remeasured distances on the 300 foot drop with a 65 meter rope, since I split the drop into 4 rappels. All the grass seed has fallen off the stalks, so no grass seed in my shoes this time!

Comment: I spent a bunch of time redoing anchors for R3, R5 and R5B. All of them needed total overhaul to make them work well. R5B did not really exist, as the old webbing on the pitons was totally shot, and the pull line was horrible off that old webbing. Now all three work well, except as noted R5B courtesy rappel quick-link will pinch to rope making the pull nearly impossible. I will caution that the R5 anchor webbing goes over a very crumbly slope of dirt and small rocks, so be careful not to knock rocks down onto your partners.
The overall canyon experience was good (even though bone dry and hot in the Sun) until the lower part (below R6) because of heavier brush, grass seeds that was magnetized to my shoes and poison oak growing in the bushes between R7 and R8. | |||||||

Comment: We cut the sneak path into the canyon, cut annoying brush in the canyon, replaced and removed all the old webbing, had major rope entanglement with brush on the 300 foot rappel (should have used a rope bag), and generally were in no hurry on a warm day. This canyon really is just a one rappel wonder, because all the rest of it is pretty crummy, although easy enough to travel with the brush cut back.
