Trip report URL:
Comments: It had rained the night before, so small puddles of water were present. All of it was avoidable except for the first rappel. We downclimbed a bit LDC to avoid dropping into the water.
4wd, low range, and a subtle lift will help with getting to either the lower or higher parking areas. We didn't hit skids when we went up past the canyon towards Briggs Cabin, but a lower vehicle might.
We opted to park/camp about .25 miles down the road from the canyon exit. Took 2 hours roundtrip, including hike up the road.
We only did 2 rappels, and we could have downclimbed LDC on the first rappel. We ghosted the 1st rap off of a large rock maybe 20 feet up canyon.
Second rap was fresh webbing and rated ql. Very nice rap, though it looks a bit deeper now (on 12/24/2025 there was .55" of rain in the park, so might have washed out a bit) compared to the photo in ropewiki, so plan on another 10 feet for this second rappel.
We really enjoyed this canyon as well. Definitely worth the effort, especially if you do a car shuttle.
I love being in conglomerate slots, and I bet you will too.

Comment: We did Death Rattle Canyon first, then did Hodgepodge as an add-on to exit Death Rattle. We didn't care for Death Rattle much, but thought Hodgepodge was worthwhile due to the conglomerate rock in it. Also, how many short-but-sweet canyons does the greater Death Valley area have?
Another group had been through very recently: there was fresh webbing and even still footprints. | |||||||
