Comments: Our group of five spent a terribly hot day in the nice cold waters of Upper Jump, starting from the express entrance. We replaced the webbing of a couple anchors and enjoyed the jumps. There is one spot where last time we were here involved a high stem, but there is now a log jammed in that makes it significantly easier. One point that did get a bit harder since the last season or two is the climb to an anchor DCR after the stem - there is a closer anchor that you don’t have to climb to that’s missing a hanger and looks like it would have a bad pull due to a jammed log, but if you climb over the large jammed logs DCR near this bolt and onto the slightly slanted slab you can instead use a good bolt with an easy pull. All of the usual obstacles are jumpable.

Comment: We tried installing a new hanger on the final rappel bolt, but the threads were too rounded to engage, so a new bolt is required. We climbed up the log lodged before the pothole and rapped off a nice bypass station there.

On an aseasonal drizzly day, a 4/3 was just barely enough warmth.

The blackberry bushes near the start of the canyon are doing great.

Comment: We took the sneak approach, which was very straightforward. There's a scramble down all the way to river level 450' upstream from the wall slide. The magical chamber rappel is missing a hanger, and the pull is particularly bad.

Comment: We join 8 friends from Utah to make for a BIG group of 11 canyoneers! Water temp in Upper was definitely chilly, neoprene gloves and socks were needed to keep hands and feet warm. Anchors are all good. We used the sneak drop-in (at the Wall Slide). We spent 4.0 hour from our cars to junction of Lower Jump only (not exit time since we continued through Lower Jump). Gage was around 11 CFS.

Comment: Water flow was moderate (gage 11 CFS), and water temp was 52F, making a full wetsuit, neoprene socks and gloves needed to stay warm, since the air temps were only 70 to 80F that weekend. Some of the anchor webbing needs replacing, but some pieces are new. There is a submerged boulder at the "floating rappel / jump" (last jump) about 5 feet out, so either jump close to the chockstone boulder or rappel.

Comment: Excellent as always, nothing much to report. Leisurely trip repeating jumps and snacking on blackberries. Water level in pools getting a bit low toward the end of the canyon.

Comment: Our "special challenge" was dropping into Upper Jump via a sneak route that connects at the giant boulder with down-climb / slide DCR side; that took 1.0 hours and has 100 foot rappel to the dry shelf next to the giant boulder. Gage flow was 13 CFS, making for some good fun in the flow. Temp seemed about mid 50F; my digital thermometer died. Anchors are all OK. The 4.5 hours includes time from the car to Lower Jump, but not exit time, since we continued down Lower Jump.

We spent plenty of time feasting on ripe blackberry too!

Comment: We had an amazing time in this canyon. The flow and temperature were just right for a hot day. The pothole arch room behind the "climb/jump" feature was especially cool. The magical chamber was the only rappel that everyone did, although we threw in a few more partial ones to check the water before jumps.

Comment: wore 4/3 temps were maybe 75 degrees out. a little chilly but moving all the time kept me just fine. The rap where the magical chamber used to be is slightly altered. Keep the rope out of the crack if possible (last rappeller) there are two bolts up top which help with the pull. The biggest risk is actually too much rope just 5 feet past the landing, small hydraulic which can trap a rope underwater. If you can get downstream of it which is easy, just pull down while someone upstream wiggles it out. This could be an issue while rappeling if it gives you a fireman belay of sorts.

Comment: Since none of us had been through Upper Jump before, we had special challenges figuring out all the Jumps vs. Rappels. At least Jump Rock was easy to figure out! The jumps we missed we figured it out after we rappelled down, like the first big waterfall in the canyon. We also found natural anchors that were rigged in poor locations, which we moved to better locations. One dual webbing anchor on a 6 inch vertical log with a 1/2" quick-link was not needed since there are a set of bolts just beyond that (have to duck under the boulder and look up).

Upper Jump is super fun, not just with numerous jumps but with several cave like chambers with water pouring through them, and plenty of rigging and rappel fun with some not so obviously anchors. It's starts out rather slow with the features, but soon becomes a real canyon and the features are packed together.

Water flow was "moderate" in terms of any class C hydraulics. Picture is from the first big waterfall (after Jump Rock) Water temp was 15.7C (60F).

    Comment: special challenges

    1. We didn't understand where the "climb jump" was. We extended the webbing on an anchor just dcr to assist the down climb which ultimately was a rappel. You can rappel all the way to the water and pull (easily) from the extended anchor be careful of swinging when getting on rappel. or use the shorter length and use as a small rap or hand line down to the area where you can jump from.

    2. Couldn't tell what was going on with the magical chamber and we were trying to strategize how to not get the rope stuck. There is a log with a sling jammed behind where you climb out. Its at a good spot higher up, but the pot hole you go into first can stick the rope, and the next crack where you rap into can also stick the rope. go as far out as possible past the white water to try and pull the rope. We saw a stuck, and very core shot (in 5 or 6 places) rope when we arrived so we were especially weary and took extra care. If this is your rope email me - [email protected]

Comment: Jumped everything but that one awful rappel you have to climb out of (Magical chamber?). Looked like flow & airspace was passing through the bottom of it. No retrieval issues (but we were careful). Swam back under the slot traverse to get pummeled by the waterfall. Gauge at 12CFS.

Hiked the shuttle. Long lunch break at the bench. No blackberries yet. Lovely day in a canyon!
