Comments: Temperatures this weekend were abnormally hot for this time of year (high of 100+ degrees). We started at sunrise, moved at a moderate pace, and reached the creek in 7h. Approach was steep and loose with consistent exposure. All webbing was weathered and/or damaged and was removed and replaced, except for R2 which was toggled from a small tree. Some pools around ankle depth that were all avoidable.

Comment: As others have stated, do not underestimate the time it takes to get through this canyon. Long drops, less ropes, heavy packs and free hangs all eat up time. If you plan to camp up by Scottys, start at first light off the rim.

Route was straight forward with the first drop off to the right. Anchor after the 210 3-stage difficult to spot, so a cairn was built. Pools stanky with dead sheep carcass. Enjoy!!

Comment: Though the mileage is short for the routes in this area, don't make the mistake of thinking you'll get through them quickly. Kanab Zero itself took us 8 hours to descend to Kanab Creek and drop camp very shortly down creek. This is partly due to the high number of rappels, the time it takes to negotiate the off trail approach and exit routes and the fact that you'll be carrying as little gear (ropes) as possible to save on weight.

We had to rappel once along the way (40 feet?)to get through the last cliff band along the Kanab route to get down to the slope that leads to the Esplanade. One brief swimmer where the book describes it - 4 of the group appreciated having wetsuits (3/2 full) one of us didn't wear one.
