Comments: This is a nice canyon. There is enough variety and length of canyon to make any canyoneer smile. We replaced the webbing at the second rappel (if you count the entrance rappel as the first rappel), the 90 footer mid canyon one - the current one had become pretty brittle. For us there were three rappels in that mid canyon section with the third one dropping into a dark hallway with about knee deep black stinky water. We ran out of time trying to find the bypass of the last two rappels and so we ended up rapping the last two. In the time that I spent looking for the bypass we could have all rapped those last two. The last two rappels are actually really cool with a free hang at the end. You could combine the last two into one like we did using a 200 foot rope but the pull was close to sticking doing it that way. The crack climb which comes after a long walk down canyon is about a 5.1 in my opinion.

Comment: Wow. We were blown away with this one. Simply incredible slot. Intricate, grandiose, and just keeps going!

Larry starts with some average stemmy slot that is somewhat shallow and mostly to avoid the thick mud and bog water below. However the further you go the deeper and more interesting the slot gets. The last half of the canyon is amazing, truely top notch, tons of variety. Narrow passages winding that open to large rooms then close up again, wild stuff.

Some water further on is unavoidable but at most waist deep and not very cold. The section near the end gets quite dark, headlamps needed. It looks like you can stay high here stemming across log jams but there is a dry easy walking chamber below, so go down low at your first opportunity here.

The technical section is long, longer than you may think, especially after doing Alcatraz the day before. The exit walking down the wide canyon is also long and although we intended to do full Larry, once on the exit we decided to scramble up the sneak as full seems to add a ton more wide open wash walking and a much longer exit.

The sneak was easy to identify and climb out, still providing a full day at a leisurely pace.

    Comment: 1pm start wasn't promising, but it was a great day. Back to the car in daylight. Good canyon all around.

    Exit scramble is good exercise. Glad we didn't walk any more wash (sorry, Full Larry...)

    Comment: Despite having done a ton of canyons in the area, we hadn't gotten to Larry's yet. What a fantastic gem. Water was about waist deep in places but it was warm enough that we almost dried out in between dips. We did 7 hours car-car (no shuttle). I definitely see why folks recommend a shuttle

    Comment: When we did it, the darkest section of the narrows has you drop down into an area full of hundreds of daddy long legs. *shudders*. I think I have arachnophobia now.

    Comment: Shallow pools to knee depth. Some of us avoided them and others did not. Cut out some old webbing at one of the trashier-looking anchors. Passed another large group by the head of the canyon. Completed the last rap sequence as the canyon-left bypass looked quite horrendous. Standard exit was exposed and longer than anticipated but straightforward and scenic. Crack climb felt like 4th class.

    Comment: ===TLDR===

    Descended Larry Canyon to the standard exit with a group of 7 canyoneers. Skill levels ranging from brand new to advanced. Took 9 hours 15 minutes from the start trailhead to exit trailhead, plus the time car shuttling. No wetsuits needed. Some pools in canyon ranging from ankle to knee-deep. Most water avoidable with effort but it is likely you will have to get your feet wet at some spots mid canyon anyway. Anchors decent but could use some clean up. We were not moving all that fast and, with that starting to be a concern, I didn't spend the extra time to do so…but I wanted to.

    CONDITIONS

    WATER No wetsuits needed. There is minimal water in the canyon and what water is present ranges from ankle to knee-deep. Most spots are avoidable with some effort but a few spots are unavoidable to all but a select few. It is very likely that you'll have to get your feet wet at some spots mid canyon anyway--unless it dries out soon.

    ANCHORS All anchors, including a few nuisance drops, are in decent shape. They all have recently placed webbing, but some have extra old webbing that should be removed. Our group was already moving slower so rather than take extra time cleaning up or rebuilding anchors that were at least safe enough, I chose to keep the group moving.

    Of the two optional raps that can be bypassed, the second anchor is not extended over the edge so the pull is tough. It would be good to re-rig this as a courtesy anchor for a better pull because there is a potential for a rope to stick here. Again, we were already pressed for time and and some were low on drinking water so we descended it as it was to speed things up. The pull had a lot of drag but it didn't stick--probably put a groove in unfortunately.

    EXIT The exit notch for the standard exit (i.e. not Full Larry) isn't all that obvious unless you really know what you're looking for or have a gpx track you're following. There is a big cairn and a well worn path up to it but be on the look out for it or you can miss it. We had sent two members in our group ahead to finishing the canyon and to the shuttle car recovery in an effort to speed things up; but they missed the cairn and trail and ultimately had to back track a ways.

    Comment: Only a few 3-6" deep puddles. All avoidable. Road to camp 2wd car accessible. Road to put in/take out high clearance ok, 4wd best. Subaru friendly.

    Comment: Long, fun-filled day through a slot with tons of variety! Stemming, down-climbing, dark slots, decent rappels, slanted hallways - everything you could ask for! Though we had one friend (MT) that constantly needed encouragement at the top of the raps and that got annoying. Not too bad exit hike - even had some fun slab climbing in the dark. Big group for my birthday: ST, LT, MS, MT, TT, TT #2, TT #'2 fling, JT, DC. Also of note: LT brought pulled pork for camp after the canyon. Very thoughtful!
