Comments: Horse approach under full moon was beautiful. Canyon was fun, a typical experience, worth it if you like long days. Placed 3 bolts to reinforce some single bolt raps. One bolt I placed was at the final 6 meter jump, for those that prefer to rap it.

Comment: Rented horses again from Aldea Matacanes for the approach hike, although this time everyone in the group rode. Virtually identical times and conditions as we had 2 years ago, with different people (except for me). We took 1hr longer in the canyon and were out at 5:30, back to Aldea at 7pm because this time we asked Mauricio to send a burro to the bottom to carry our packs out. Everyone in the group agreed the the canyon wasn't worth doing, and probably just spending a day riding horses (such as riding up to the saddle for the sunrise) would be preferable to also including the canyon descent. Maybe doing this early in the winter when there is much more water would change the experience greatly for the better.

Comment: We rented 4 horses through Mauricio at Aldea Matacanes -- 3 of us rode and one was a pack horse. The other 3 people walked. Horses didn't go any faster than the walkers, but was SOO much easier. We were awake at 4am and horses arrived at 4:30am, and we were off and riding just before 5am. Sunset happened just as we were reaching the pass at 7am, absolutely gorgeous. We all dismounted at the pass and walked downhill from there, and the horses followed to the town of Las Lagunillas where we took our packs, which was now about 9am. At 9:45am we were suited up in the the canyon and started our descent. We finished at the junction with the lower Matacanes trail at 4:30pm, took about half an hour to gear down and snack, and then 2 more hours to walk back to Potrero Redondo which we reached at 7pm.

The water flow in the canyon was on the low side, and although at the start it was chilly, toward the end of the canyon the pools were warm and manky. But right before the very end the canyon gets a boost of fresh water coming in from the sides and the stream cooled off and cleared up again. Overall I was glad to have finally done this canyon after 14 years of coming here, but would not repeat it in the near future. Pay-to-play ratio was too high -- would rather just do lower Matacanes another time :-)

Comment: A great canyon with lots of rappels and a few jumps and slides if water conditions allow. Normally this canyon runs dry or with little water, but since there was recent rain we brought wet suits just in case, and they turned out to be essential to enjoying the trip. We were in the water a lot throughout the day.
