Comments: I wanted to see this canyon before it starts to get more water in the fall. It was a trickle this time of year.We shuttled cars the gate was open and the road was in decent condition. The creek walk was long but wasn't hard, I don't think ill attempt the bush wack. We couldn't find the pinch for R2 we used a meat anchor. Anchors seemed to be in good shape!

Comment: Ran this with Matt and just wanted to add a couple of observations. Beta had not been updated before we entered the creek. New bolt station at R1 (2 unlinked glue ins center of creek well back from the edge) has now been updated. Use caution on this pull as your block will be sliding down the creek bed and ours got jammed on a crack or lip. Luckily this drop can be down climbed or unclimbed with little risk.

R2-R3 beta confusing. There was a drop after R1 of about 15-20 feet that had no anchor (there was a giant boulder DCL, but we didn't see and anchor pinch) that we meat anchored. Then there is a drop with bolts DCL directly above R3 big drop that is easily down climbable DCR. Didn't know which drop was R2. Then there is the big drop at R3. From the two-bolt station DCL above the big drop it is only ~130'. We understood that to be the 180' drop from the beta and used our 300' rope with a pull cord extension. When I flaked out 180' there was a huge pile of excess rope at the bottom (not visible from the top) and the remaining 120 of the tail just about reached the bottom. Was the 180' in the beta from the drop just above the big drop? Why? Maybe in high flow that might need a rebelay instead of a down climb. The pull was very hard. Even with the pull cord extended we had to put three people pulling from quite a way downstream and have one person keep flipping the rappel line to reduce the friction. This anchor might need some work or Transient Releasable Rigging to recover rope. For R8 there are bolts now DCR. We had plenty of rope with a 50' rope for the rappel and pull.

If you add bolts and change anchors to a canyon, please update the Beta.

Comment: Tried the bushwhack "shortcut" route in to see if it was any better. Steep in places, lots of detrius and slash from old clearcut operation made it harder. Took about an hour, so unconvinced it's an easier way in. Looks like Panther got hit hard by winter storms -- quite a bit of new woody debris and logs in the creek that weren't there last time. There's a new landslide near the bottom, where the creek vanishes briefly from view under the rocks. Other than that, a lovely day out. Lots of wildflowers. All anchors in decent shape.

Comment: Second visit to Panther. Water levels were about half of what they were in June 2020. New bolt station for the big rappel improves the anchor situation. We were able to downclimb much of the "trench" section in the lower creek; last time we bypassed per high water. An excellent early season creek in the Green Peter area!

Comment: Had a fun day in the canyon. It was a hot day (close to 100 degrees in the valley) and we didn't need wet-suits. We used some rain jackets in the lower parts of the canyon, but we were very comfortable. One of our cars was a 2wd sedan and it was able to make the drive to the top.

Comment: Possible first descent of Panther as we found no other anchors or signs of previous visitors. The walk down the upper creek to Waterfall Alley is a bit long, would be nice if a shortcut could be found to drop in early. (It looks feasible, but that approach is not explored yet.) The upper series of waterfalls particularly nice and the creek stays pretty interesting all the way down to the end. We visited after a week or so of rainy weather in Oregon and flows on the creek were surprisingly high for June. This creek doesn't have that large of a watershed, so the other thought its that perhaps its spring-fed. Caution was required, particularly in the narrow areas on the creek, as the flow would suddenly get pushy on you. Several waterfalls were kicking off big rooster-tails of water. Altogether, a very pleasant descent. A keeper.
