Comments: We did a bottom up approach, I do not recommend. It took about 6 hours to get to then a bit slow moving on the alluvial fan after we were done. Otherwise, it was a beautiful canyon with gorgeous folding in the rock. Just be aware of canyon velcro between a few drops and that pool of stagnate water at the bottom is still there. Some portions are a little difficult to navigate your way down too but very manageable to downclimb. Our group downclimbed a decent portion of this canyon. Not bad for a third canyon in my personal case.

Comment: The approach to Purgamal is long and brutal as you have to traverse many rock laden scree fields of other canyons to reach this one. It took us 3 hrs to reach the drop in point. The redeeming quality of Pugamal are the challenging down climbs over slot like features and beautiful rock formations. We built a new anchor for one rappel where prior parties used a sand trap and fixed a rock pinch anchor to be more secure.

Be aware that the bottom of the canyon exit had a thigh high pool of stagnant water. You can try to climb around DCL if you are comfortable. Some people in the party were able to navigate around the left of the pool holding onto crumbling rocks. Some just choose to walk through it.
