Comments: Sweet!!! We backpacked in via Gold / Swett and camped at exit of redemption, at confluence with main drainage. It was an easy hike to spring water. Some jaunty scramble moves (awkward 4th class) on the next morning's approach to Redemption. The hike up was beautiful. The canyon was FUN. We used a sandtrap and a water anchor multiple times each. Both are essential gear. There is a delightful swimming hole in the middle of the canyon (big deep pothole in the sun, easy to get out and run laps). We managed to avoid the poison ivy but there was quite a bit in some places. Gorgeous canyon that is close to pristine, please help keep it that way. This time reflects leisurely afternoon approach to camp and then hiking out after canyon.

Comment: We established a new approach for this canyon that allows it to be run in a single day! The new approach is 5 miles and took us 3 hours to arrive at the canyon at a brisk pace. The original approach is around 9 miles with far more strenuous elevation gain near the end, originally making for a 2 day effort.
The canyon had some very beautiful swirly slotted sections intermixed with open riparian sections. Lots of memorable features! We toggled on trees outside of the water course a few times, used our water anchor twice and sand trap once. There were only 2 keeper potholes that we had to get in/out of and they were not very challenging or deep, no pot shots needed. 2 brief swims and lots of wades. The day was warm and lot of sunlight in and between sections, wasnt cold, was glad I didnt bring a wetsuit. At the largest rap into the poison ivy alcove we traversed the ledge DCR and toggled a tree to avoid the ivy. Doing so, we only needed about 80' for the rappel. Lots of stemming and elevator downclimbs, pads were nice to have. Redemption Spring lies at the end of the canyon and is perfect to filter water from. The canyon took us 5hrs to descend and reach the spring at a moderate pace. Plenty more poison ivy on exit beyond the spring, all avoidable with some care. Exiting up Swett Wash was just over 7 miles from the spring and took us almost 4 hours at a moderate pace with a few brakes. Swett Wash was definitely pretty but very long and cobbly! So glad we only had to hike it once! A great route that definitely makes you work for it!
