Comments: Followed the track line, for gaining over 1k ft of elevation on approach it’s actually not bad at all until the last 1/4 mile where it gets steep. The 1st 3 rappels are super fun and probably the highlight of the canyon. All anchors were solid! Happy to report I encountered 0 bees at any point on this run. I couldn’t see the webbing on R5 so I went off a tree DCR. Just past R5 a log jam collapsed under my footing and I caught myself in the dip position on a big rock, there are alot of slippery rocks and numerous down climbs with logs everywhere. Careful when approaching these obstacles. The lower canyon offer nice narrows and a couple nice pools. Water is also quite cool!!!

Comment: Fun and pretty creek. The last push on the approach is pretty steep but pretty short so not too bad. We split and took two slightly different routes on the last ~150ft and the team member on the right (closest to Riley creek) encountered wasps and was stung once. Quite a bit of creek walking - we cut back up to the top after R4 and dropped back in at R5. Water was definitely a bit colder on the second half. We were all in dry suits, but since you don’t spend too much time submerged, I think a full wetsuit would have sufficed.
R1: something had chewed the webbing, so we replaced it. We creeped the rope as suggested, but still had damage to our rope. Sharp edge is within the flow. R2: webbing also chewed - more minimal damage and probably still ok to rappel on but we replaced to be safe. Be careful on pull - potential for the block to get stuck on the pull. R3: on the lip DCL two V notches with metal scuff marks - maybe from a block? Try to keep pull to the middle to avoid. R4: there might be potential to add bolt on canyon right above first tier. R5: webbing ends were chewed - should probably be replaced by the next group through. Possible foot entrapment under flow, so tread carefully. | |||||||

Comment: Riley was a good creek and would have received a higher rating if there wasn't so much downclimbing and creek walking. Approach is pretty easy and straight forward. Crossing Mutton Creek was easy if you find that game trail down to the creek. You will run into a band of rock in the steep approach section when paralleling Riley, if you veer to the left its a little easier to climb through. We did encounter wasps in this section but no where else in the trip.
R1 - We used the anchor and rappelled in the flow. We were being careful, creeping the rope, and our rope was damaged. This is not a good rappel line. The beta says sharp edge, I think moving the anchor if possible is a solution. You can use the existing anchor and rappel out of the flow. The sharp edge is in the flow. R3 - There is a flat edge with V notches where you want to route your pull. Throw your pull more to the middle of the waterfall to avoid the V notches.

Comment: Added 2 rappels to lower. Encountered a fierce yellowjacket nest on the approach. Two in our group got stung very bad multiple times. Quite harrowing. The extended creeking was well worth the effort. Lots of tasty blueberries made for a feast. Lots of Devils Club were easy to avoid. Upper and lower sections have two very different characteristics, making it a unique canyon experience.
