Comments: We did Neon first, then headed over to Ringtail. Three hours was time from Escalante River, back to the river, thus not including river hiking time from Neon and back to camp at Fence.

One pothole early on looks like a keeper, but in fact is not, and it's easy enough to escape around it by climbing up the slab DCL, then rappel/hand-lining back into the canyon beyond it. Once we checked it from the downstream side, one member stemmed down into the pool and easily exited. The water was deep enough to jump since it was checked as over 7 feet deep.

The true keeper pothole starts with a rappel off a log jam into a belled out deep pothole (see pic). We tried potshot tosses from standing in the pothole, but the tosses did not catch on anything on the other side, and since the exit slope is so shallow, light force pulled the potshot bag back. Since the pothole was about 5 feet deep near the exit climb side, we quickly gave up on the potshot in favor of a 3 person shoulder stand, which quickly got the climber on top. Also, there a 2 (maybe 3) drill hooking holes, we had hooks available, but did not test the holes to see if they were still functional.

Overall a fun and quick canyon with a very dark section toward the end that's nearly caving!

Comment: Some water in ringtail but didn't need wetsuits on a warm day. There is a hazard in canyon right now - an unstable hanging log above the first pothole. It was difficult to avoid while on rappel. If it fell, it is large enough to cause significant injury if someone was under it.

Comment: We found Ringtail to be one of the best canyons we did in the area in terms of bang for your buck. It's not too long, but has tons of fun features packed in. A couple of potholes were keepers, but were defeated with a pack toss and partner assist respectively. The pack toss was made substantially easier by having one team member stem above the pothole and toss the packs from there.

Comment: First pothole is in keeper mode. Able to get out with partner assist standing on shoulders (Aug 30th) or potshots dropped about 20' on other side of pothole into wedge (Aug 31st). Pothole was not swimmer, thigh deep at drop in, chest deep at end. Second pothole was able to get out with bag toss or easy partner assist. No swims, at most chest deep water.
