Comments: New folk canyon run through full. In the daytime, there are a good amount of bees in the second stage of Diana’s bath and also in the penultimate near the bottom so be alert and try not to rappel on the edge of the water flow where they congregate. Penultimate is pretty sunfaded and due up for replacement soon. Other anchors were good. Canyon approach is getting a bit more run out with the lack of rain.

Comment: Canyon gardening run for funsies. Brought a machete to clean up a lot of the canyon kelp and carve a somewhat defined path. Should be clear enough for folks of all experience levels and bushwhacking skills to be able to run without complaints. 2 hrs c2c inclusive of gardening time.

Comment: Part of a 3 canyon Black Friday run. Anchors are in okay condition; 2 of them are showing heavy evidence of sun fading and may be up for replacement. Spot after the 2 stage rappel is heavily overgrown so lots of fun navigating that mess. 1:24 c2c but weather being overcast definitely helped.

Comment: Perfect weather. Water level low, minimal splashing at some rappels. Few pools knee height or lower.

Canyon is overgrown, people are lazy! Take some tools into the canyons and do some clean up! If everybody spent 10-20 minutes cleaning at each canyon run - All canyons will always be clean enough. Someone added too many bolts. Some are poorly placed.

Comment: Water flow is steadily decreasing, but still enough for flow all the way through all the drops. It was a super nice day with high air temp in the 70's. The canyon kelp is out of control in the middle canyon. And there are still a few frogs out and about.

Comment: Night canyon run around 3 hrs c2c. Rappels are all in good condition. There’s a surprising amount of water to get up to mid calf (especially on the pooly approach to penultimate rappel). Good amount of kelp in some of the course, altering the normal path a bit. On the approach hike up be warned that there was some trail runout, exposure, and potential for rockfall (about maybe 100 paces up from thalehaha).

Comment: We had an 8 year old canyon "noob" along, thus "special challenges. He did great! Water flow is steadily dropping (see pics) and the temperature is going down too. And someone recently did significant trimming on the approach trail, which makes it super nice now. In the canyon, the canyon kelp is super thick in a few spots.

Comment: We were on the trail at ~730 am since it was going to be a pretty hot day getting up the main Rubio trail. We were able to beat the heat for the hike portion of the canyon. Canyon was in pretty normal class B conditions. Ran the canyon with 10 people and we were able to get through it all in 6 hours. I’m not sure how new this is but the last rappel now has 2 options. Rappelling the last waterfall is usually the standard route but now there is another rappel up canyon DCL that search and rescue recently installed from what I was told. It’s a really nice 40-50 foot rappel with some free hanging sections. I would recommend 2 strong leaders to manage this rappel. One anchor manager above and one at the redirect a little bit below. In total, this last rap has 6 bolts (4 at the main anchor, 2 at the redirect). Canyon didn’t feel too overgrown right now, only small bushwhacking in small sections of the canyon. Other than the last variation, canyon was pretty normal. The big rappels are pretty fun slides!

Comment: Pretty smooth, all raps were good but the special challenges rating because the Canyon is very bushwhacky and there where bee swarms on some raps notably on rap 3 at the top. I imagine the swarms are just the bees migrating not necessarily a “hive” so they might clear up we just needed to move very slowly up there.

Comment: Grotto night trip with some new folks. 2 party members split at the overlook and ran full while the others dropped into short and linked up at the top of Thalehaha. Full canyon is nice; heavy algae and some water. Replaced R1 due to sun fading with red webbing. A good amount of the canyon has gotten some overgrowth, making it slightly bushwhacky.

Replaced webbing DCL of the 3rd to last rappel (where you have the option of DCL or DCR) due to sun fading and webbing damage at the hanger. As this was a night run, a long sleeve shirt was nice to keep bugs away but the heat was noticeable.

Comment: I dropped into Rubio Leontine from the full East Fork, so my 1.5 hours is only from R1 back to my car. Flow is nice for getting wet (see pic). There are a LOT of frogs in Rubio now (see pic 2)!

Comment: Since I was helping with a SCMA safety evaluation that morning until early afternoon on the rock formations at the last waterfall, my approach climb was in the brutal heat (special challenges). However, the "very low" water in the canyon was plenty to stay wet and it flows through all the waterfalls, although it does disappear in between the last 3. Since Rubio has been so wet this year and last year, there are an amazing number of frogs and tons of tadpoles in the pools.

Comment: I did not check my harness carefully before I hike up and wound up with no rappel or backup rappel device. I used a Munter hitch with an extra quick-link for more friction and braking control (special challenges, see pic, more friction down / less friction up, opposite to a standard Munter / the same as a normal rappel device). Water temp has warmed up to 62F, which is warm enough for just a rain jacket, but since I was there early in the morning I took a shortie. The water flow is still decent all the way through the canyon.

Comment: The flow has dropped a lot and the water temp has warmed up to where a rain jacket is plenty for the Leontine waterfall. Even starting at 5:00PM, and mostly being in the shade in the canyon we were plenty warm on this 70F+ day. However, the biting flies are out and annoying! A full rain shell helps with the flies.

Comment: The water flow is still holding in there (see pic). The foggy day would have been a chilly run, but we brought wetsuits, since we did Rubio right after LSA. Quite a few frogs are out and about.
