Comments: I love this canyon. Beautiful deep sculpted red basalt covered with moss and ferns, some fun big rappels and beautiful, clean (and cold) water. Flow was high enough to be super fun but never real pushy. We skipped the mid-wall rebelay on the big rap because it seemed unnecessary. There was a lip partway down where the rope went over a ledge but it wasn't really sharp and the rebelay wouldn't have avoided it anyway. Frankly I don't really understand all the rebelays on this island. They don't make pulls that much easier and abrasion is happening anyway. They're good if you want to take way longer in canyon and hang freezing in your harness for a long time and impress people with your ability to rig while hanging. I guess you could bring less rope but the big rap is only 38 meters. It's not that much rope. Also handlines to super-exposed bolt stations when a more accessible spot a few feet away would have been an identical rappel line without significantly more contact between rope and rock. Are people showing off? Ok I'm done bitching.thank you for listening.

Comment: After the hike up, follow the lavada to the right and don't deviate until you find the correct drainage. You can open the lavada door at the top of the drainage for more flow in canyon. The highlight is the first narrows and the open rappel. We didn't rebelay the longest rappel--bolts are there for it but best to do it as one.

Comment: What a fun day! It started out with a bang, as just after we entered the canyon, we were surprised as someone opened a gate from the levada and a new waterfall came rushing in! We ran up and talked to him - he was just testing it and closed it. This canyon is straight forward and totally beautiful. We chose not to use the rebelay on the big falls - it was still a great line for rappelling, and the pull was simple. The unexpected bonus of the day was sunshine in the lower canyon! The lower section is just stunning, and then ends with a few short rappels that have more water to make it sporty and fun. Easy exit as well. Can’t wait to do it again!
