Comments: Completely dry and really hot. We struggled on the approach - its undefined and full of cacti and sketchy scrambling up exposed rock. We swam across the lake both ways which was doable and a needed cool down. Rappels had some tricky starts. Last rappel into the lake is nice. Doesn’t seem worth doing this time of year.

Comment: If I could, I’d give it 2.5. The nasty brush on the far shore, the chossy climb, and the awkward, yet short first 2 raps are all a pain. But the last rap makes it worth doing at least once, and makes for a quick, if scruffy intro to nearby canyons. I recommend leaving watercraft at home. This is by a friendly place for packrafts or other inflatables. I make sure everyone has a 20L drybag, rolled up with lots of air inside. With that (or some other floaty device) in the pack, backstroking to the other side (and back at the end) is no big deal - and I’m a below average swimmer.

Webbing on the short raps is getting crispy, will need replacing soon. Big rap anchor was solid. All pulls easy. Some bees near R4 anchor, but they stayed calm.

Comment: Light flow. A couple swims and deep wades. Water was colder than anticipated and we appreciated having wetsuits, though they weren’t critical. We packed our rafts through the canyon and inflated them at the large staging area above the final rappel.

Comment: We took crappy packrafts across the lake, landed at the little cove and then did a short section of heavy bushwhacking near the lake's edge to get into a less brushy area. Instead of doing the exposed class 3/4 route, we just kept going up the drainage to the saddle, then turned right and went over the top to where you drop into the canyon. Raps 1 & 2 have some really awkward starts on chock stones with voids beneath them. Both land you in a pool that is too shallow for jumping. They were waist to chest deep. Rap 3 was an easy two-stage with avoidable water. We put new webbing on rap 4 at a rock pinch directly across from the rappel. Looks like it has been used previously because it had bits of webbing stuck in it, but we added webbing and a ring because the one that was there was crispy and had a rusty ring from being in the water. Right after we made it back to the other side of the lake, we noticed the current pick up a lot, so just be aware that water can be released from the dam any time.

Comment: did it with packrafts and decided the scramble over from the little ledge RDC of the splash point looked too sketchy so we put them up in the bushes a few hundred feet to the west. this was fine but beware the many thorns which can make quick work of a pool toy's thin skin. also we then had to swim that whole way back to them, which wasn't much shorter than just swimming back to the other side. there were a couple swimmers though it was actively flowing and I'd imagine these dry up a bit for most of the year. canyon is short and ok but rapping into the lake is cool. the fishermen near the bottom barely looked up from their lines so I guess people are doing some cool shit all the time down here. didn't replace any anchors. no rope pull issues.
