Comments: As of Aug 27, 2017, the bolts for the final rappel (Wahclella Falls) have been stripped out due to the Winter season. If you have descended R5 (second to last rappel), it is possible to climb up from a rocky platform DCR about 20 feet to a large platform. Send an experienced climber first and send down a rope for others. At the platform, look for a large cairn anchor close to the edge (do not use the one close to DCL as it will put you directly in the flow). The rappel is about 140 feet and lands just barely outside of the white water below.

We split out group into two groups. The first group went to check the condition of the bolt traverse - note that the 3rd hangar spins. The first group had difficult traversing through the bushwhack and got cliffed out several times. Unless you are familiar with the terrain and ravines that don't show up on a topo, it is best to follow the bushwhack down to the creek and cut across along side the canyon to check the bolt traverse.

We did not descend the last rappel due to several factors, mainly due to the lack of protection for re-placing the bolts and crappy rock quality. We were able to escape up from the rocky ledge and rappel down about 140 ft from a platform about 30' higher from the creek. Setting an escape line is critical for this canyon for those who attempt to run it as the first of the season.

  • " We descended Tanner Creek yesterday, it's running high and it's more technical than ever, but the bolts in the traverse were all in good shape. However, the bolt at the top of the last fall were gone, in fact the whole rock edge was gone, probably impacted by the winter storms. We rebolted the last..." Pacific North-West Canyoning

Comment: Deceived by the final waterfall recent pics, we realized at the top of the last rappel the flow was now much higher than when we first opened the canyon. Strong current at the top of the final falls, mandatory to be on belay or you will get flushed out. Original bolt traverse in good shape, bolts at the final rap were obliterated along with the rock edge, hammered by winter storms. Rebolted the rappel as a webbingless anchor.

Comment: It took us 3 days to fully descend this canyon (all ending in the dark or close to around dark) due to scouting, setting up bolts, rim teams, etc... The name of the game is mostly waterfall avoidance for this canyon due to the large volume of water that this creek sees. This canyon should only be done by canyoneers with a lot of Class C canyoneers (or go with someone who has run the canyon) due to massive hydraulics, siphons, powerful water current, etc.. The bolts should be checked after every Spring season/heavy rains to ensure they are still there prior to entering the canyon. The water is very cold!
