Comment: Well flagged trail with pink markings. Many were in 5/4 full suits and got a little chilled. We could have not used the traversal in Slot of Doom at our water level. Some rapides are rusting shut, especially in the lower section. Some really rusty chains as well in the lower. Still solid but could potentially use some updates. Great canyon. We did superior down, and the section above also looked really good (we were wishing we hiked up to the highest entrance.)

Comment: Did from Superior Entrance to the escape two downclimbs after R35 (which as escapes go is fairly nice - don't get mislead by the the possible escape immediately after R35 though, do the downclimbs, escape is immediately before R36). Bolts all good although a few where quite difficult to access.
Very cold and technical canyon but a great challenging day! Skills with hanging rebelays and traverses needed. | |||||||

Comment: We rappelled in at the Superiore entrance. This seems to be the most popular drop in and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to do the canyon.
Approach 2:50 Canyon 6:45 Exit 1:00 Total was about 11 hours Approach: Pretty well marked by pink tape on trees once you start heading up between the General and Captain juction. The pink tape led us in a slightly different path than what is outlined on the kiwi canyons topo. Descent: We traveled through the canyon with full bolting gear but all anchors were in place. The biggest issue is that the majority of the rapides are rusted. The majority of them need to be cut off and replaced with stainless rapides or stainless ring hangers. We tightened some loose hangers. Slot of doom was pretty pushy. At the bottom of the first sequence in the slot of doom, the pool was a swimmer. Rope management is important in this section. The flow will sweep your rope down canyon during the pull if you don't manage the rope correctly. This just makes things messy so don't do it. There are a handful of siphons in this canyon that could cause serious problems in very high flow. Exit: Super cruiser. We just walked down the creek back to our car. |
