Comment: The GPX for this location is terrible. Someone needs to redo it and mark the rappels and key points. I want to go back just to put a better GPX out there. I’ve done this one twice. I think it’s highly underrated. The first rappel into the crack/chimney is pretty unique and it drops you into a cave like area with an amazing view. The second rappel has a bit of a sketchy start, but is also fun. The hike out has some fun scrambling, but you get into some bush wacking for a lot of it. I’m guessing that’s where the lower ratings come from. I think this canyon deserves a higher rating than what it has, just based on the first rappel alone.

Comment: Great little canyon, with a beautiful, dramatic chimney drop-in. Anchors were in good shape.

Comment: Time includes visiting Solider's Cave and hitting the New Day Route prior, at a leisurely pace.

I parked at Brin's Mesa and hiked in from there. There is no parking aloud at Solider's Pass TH (without special permit) nor can you park on the streets anywhere near it. There is a free shuttle service that goes from one of the offsite free parking lots over to Soldier's Pass. Last pickup from Solider's Pass is 5:08pm, I was informed.

Approaching via Ciabola Pass to Jordan Trail from Brin's Mesa parking area adds a couple miles of hiking but ultimately seems to be the easiest option. Ciabola Pass, Jordan Trail, and Solider's Pass are all very pretty and easy hikes with lots to see on the way!

On Solider's Pass, I followed the hiking trail up to Solider's Cave which was super cool, very interesting, but unfortunately corroded with people. I moved up through the cave and climbed out the top to hit New Day Canyon as it started to rain, before continuing over to The Subway.

The off-trail hiking over to The Subway was pretty and easy to follow. Scenery is beautiful on this side!

The rappel through the crack in the ground into The Subway's alcove is very cool indeed.

After getting back to Solider's Pass, I hiked the 4x4 trail parallel to the hiking trail, (which is probably quicker and more direct) back to Devil's Kitchen then continued on back Brin's Mesa Parking.

Overall, The Subway is pretty neat and requires relatively little effort to get to (just lots of easy hiking trails). However, I'd say it is only worth doing if you already want to hike Solider's Pass, and you add in other points of interest along the way like Solider's Cave (definitely worth checking out) and perhaps the New Day route which was okay but if you are checking out Solider's Cave, might as well hit that one too for the heck of it.

Comment: Parked off Dry Creek Rd and approached via Brins Mesa Trail (45 min to R1). Car-to-car just under 2.5 hours. R2 webbing was in good shape, but R1 webbing may need replacement soon. Remeasured rappel lengths and updated beta.

Comment: straightforward approach to a cool rappel that is bolted.

I've heard this was used for tours which makes sense that it is bolted. The keyhole alcove that you rappel into is pretty awesome and the highlight of the route.

one more short rappel off a tree gets you to the exit drainage.

it would save time to approach new day canyon by entering the soldiers arch cave and climbing out then hiking a short distance to the 1st rappel on new day.

The combo of the two routes with the cave approach

would be an adventurous outing for beginners.

my friends paul and Amanda got engaged just after the second rappel and on the exit!

Comment: Only did subway due to time constraint (no new day). Anchors are all in good condition. Lots of cairns to mislead you on the way in, and lots of debris in the exit. Dodge the debris and keep following the wash to exit- it will eventually lead you back to Soldiers Pass Trail. Pro tip: the parking lot opens at 8am on the dot and is full by 8:05am. We arrived at 7:45am to a closed gate and no other cars in sight and decided to park on Soldier pass road .5 miles from soldiers pass trailhead. By the time we walked to the TH there were about 15 cars lined up to enter the lot at 8am. Save yourself the trouble and just park on Soldier pass road and walk!

Comment: 7 hours for both New Day and Sedona Subway. A fair amount of hiking but definitely best to do both canyons together. Great views. All of the anchors were present and in good shape. Some slightly tricky starts, but nothing crazy. Subway was cool, to bad the canyon isn't longer. Parking is VERY limited, and these trails are BUSY, we walked an extra .5 miles or more from our car parked in the nearest legal spot we could find to the trailhead.

Comment: 7 hours car to car for both New Day and Sedona Subway (and about 7 miles hiking overall), I assume most will do both in a day. Soldiers Pass trailhead only holds 14 cars and fills up fast, the alternate street parking on Rim Shadows Dr nearby seems legal; no Red Rock pass required. We took the long way around to get to New Day to stay on trail (right on Brins Mesa trail before leaving to enter the brushy upper drainage). There was no anchor present for first rappel in New Day Canyon; we ghosted presuming hikers are taking anchors. Easy to use a retrievable anchor from the tree at the top of the drop. Even the most beginner members of the group (13 year old, second canyon) were okay on the downclimb (4th rappel) with a spot, though it does have one tricky spot. Though Sedona Subway does not really resemble its namesake in any way, it is still pretty cool, if incredibly short.
