Comment: Wife 5. Group of 12. One teenager who was on their first rappelling activity ever (After a lot of prep work and some practice.) Mixed ability group but majority were beginners and novices.

The absolute beginner did great, but was scared and went slow. Moving a big group took more time than anticipated.

Lower in the canyon there is some waist-deep water. It can be stemmed over, but most beginners will have difficulty doing this for the last pool.

We rebuilt a few anchors which took some time.

Great experience. Finished before the rain moved in later in the evening.

Comment: Route-finding was interesting for a first time Wife visitor. We did Wife 3 and 5 in that order. Wife 3 was the better of the two, with a fantastic first rappel and mostly dry conditions. It took us a while to find a good route into Wife 5. We chose the left-hand route down to a short tree rappel, where we had to replace a poorly created anchor. Beyond that, the canyon was straightforward with some deep and unavoidable pools. We replaced the webbing on one additional anchor lower in the canyon, the rest being in good condition. All told, a good day in a very scenic area.

Comment: Wives 3 and 5. 3 was much better than I expected. About 5 rappels total (likely could have bypassed 2 of them if you wanted). Anchor for the first rappel has currently been extended such that pull is relatively trivial. 1.5 hours for wife 3.

5 was also great. Lots of interesting anchors and starts. Rather than downclimbing the gully at the top ghosted the tree in the other gully. Soft starting the last rappel requires some interesting downclimbing. 1 hour for 5 but largely because I soloed this one quickly as we were running out of light. Pools were less than knee deep I think (but I avoided most pools and just got the bottom 1/4 inch of my shoes wet in one spot.

Used a CEM in many places to limit rope grooves.

Comment: Wives 3 and 5. Webbing and anchors in good condition. Dug up and inspected deadman on last rappel, but still used meat anchor except for Lamar. No water at all. Fun! Some interesting down climbs and tricky rappels on Wives 5.

Comment: Descended Wife 5 and Wife 3. 5 people, 4hrs 45mins car to car. No water, snow, or ice present in the canyons or on approach/exits. Anchors and webbing in the canyons are in good condition and in proper order. Clear, sunny sky and decent temps for November. Jackets were needed in the canyon at times. Not even a small pocket of water was present in either canyon. No unusual rigging or hazards to report.

Comment: Wives 3 & 5.

Wife 3: The pull on the first rappel had some friction but everything came down smoothe. There are more rappels than what is on the kml we kept our rope out until we hit the trail. Fun downclimbs.

Wife 5: Getting to the first anchor was fun slightly tricky but fun to figure out. Appreciated that there weren't other anchor options that bypassed the fun downclimb. Beautiful mini canyon with unique features. KML was spot on for this route.

    • Approach: Take left side of approach canyon up.

Going directly up the approach canyon is more challenging depending on height.

Comment: Our party did Wife #3. Awesome canyon! The 200' entry rappel is spectacular. All anchors were in good shape, and all downclimbs had anchors as well making a very easy go of it. The final 2 stage rappel described in the beta as "not recommended" and "difficult pull" is rigged high LDC in such a way that the pull is very easy. Great, short, afternoon trip. Excited to go back and try some of the other wives ;).

Comment: Did 3, 4, and 5. All anchors were in good shape. Bluugnome has great descriptions and pictures for the approaches of the wives.

5: We met up with a canyoning class in wife 5 while we were there, and they had recently redug all the dead man's anchors there, so we didn't have to worry about any of that.

If you're using bluugnome's beta; it mentions a down climb after the third rappel in 5; it's a sloping handrop, and better done as a two-stage rappel if you're having a hard time gripping the edge of the drop, and have the rope to do it.
