Comments: Very easy 1/2 day trip. Fiddled tree to reach boulder RDC as first timers were skeptical about downclimb. Rap ring directly under big boulder. After that, very easy quick canyon. Replaced webbing on tree off 3rd mando rap.

CONDITIONSApproach and Exit: Standard approach and exit are obvious and nothing noteworthy to mention. Water Exposure: No water at all despite recent rains and some light sprinkling. Sandstone was quite dry too. Anchors & Rappels: The canyon is all bolted now (illegally or legally) and honestly, for a trade-route canyon like this that is done frequently by beginners and showing signs of rope grooving, it is probably best that is it bolted. Anchors in good shape. STATS

Comment: Nice pleasant day out today in Arches. We obtained a permit at the visitors' center; it's a self-serve kiosk that's located near the front door. Parking is at the Park Avenue top lot, and walk to the base of the ascent gully is about five minutes or so.
This is what we observed on the descent: R1 - this was a very short rappel, maybe 3 or 4 meters, using a single bolt located under a large boulder on a slope. You may be able to stem and downclimb here, but we felt it was easy enough to just get geared up at this point and play it safe. R2 - this rappel was perhaps 15 meters. There's an obvious large block on the right hand side that has many scars from rope pull, and a large boulder to the left where there was a two-bolt anchor with a sling and ring. We used the bolts to avoid any more rock damage. The initial step to get onto rappel is weird, a goofy maneuver to set under the bolts and scoot under the boulder to get into position. Nothing dangerous, just awkward. R3 - there are three options here as you enter the larger amphitheater. Option 1, there's a slung boulder on the right side, currently slung with blue. Option 2 is in the center, there's a large boulder with a hole around shoulder-height, it's slung with red. Option 3 is on the far left, a large boulder slung with red. Reports of two bolt anchor in the middle - we couldn't find it. We opted for the left-most station, easy setup and clean pull over a vertical face. R4 - the final tier before reaching the canyon floor, there were two options here. In the middle is a slung boulder that descends near where water would flow through the canyon, currently slung with brown/tan. Right is a two bolt anchor with a sling and ring. We used the bolts, easy descent and clean pull near some bushes and trees. To leave, stay to the right side near the wall of the canyon, don'y descend any farther into the waterway. Easy walk back to the Park Avenue trail, ten or fifteen minutes back to the car. Very easy day and extremely scenic way to experience Arches.

Comment: Started our climb up close to 6pm so we were short on daylight (late Sept). We made it up fine and quickly found the 1st and 2nd rappels as stated in Road Trip Ryan's (RTR) beta. We couldn't find the third anchor though and it was already getting dark in that area. Luckily we spotted a big boulder at the very far left (LDC) with a red webbing around it (thank you whoever used a bright color and not a sand color webbing). Getting there is a bit sketchy, specially for beginners and rushed in time bc of daylight. Once down, we put on our headlamps and looked for the last anchor. IT was next to the boulder as detailed in RTR's beta. Went down and walked back to the parking lot. Stopped halfway through to enjoy the stars (least you can do if you are already walking during the night).
Took about 3hrs C2C. We would have certainly made it out sooner if we hadn't spent so much time trying to find the third anchor. Either it wasn't there anymore or we totally missed it. From some videos I watched (after the trip). I saw some people downclimbing that section or pointing to some rocks where people used to wrap webbing around, but seems they stopped doing that because of the grooves. Perhaps the only anchor is truly the boulder we used, but certainly be careful, it feels a bit exposed to get to that rock. It may be very risky if wet or icy! Definitely a nice outing and good for beginners. Just don't start so late as darkness makes it hard for someone who is a total newbie!

Comment: A good canyon for taking beginners or to use as a second canyon to fill up a day, but otherwise not too remarkable for the area. The initial scramble up is tall and steep but very manageable and took about 20 min. We rigged one short rappel off a boulder but the rest had bolted or webbing anchors already in place. All of the technical obstacles were in quick succession. The final rappel is quite nice. After that it is an easy hike down the canyon to the Park Ave trail and back to the parking lot.

Comment: This was my second time doing this canyon. Weather was great. Canyon was dry and views were spectacular.
The second rappel (or third if you don't downclimb at the top) had an improperly tied quad anchor, which I fixed (the quicklink over all four strands instead of three). I'm sure it will probably be messed up again by someone after me though. | |||||||
