Comments: Thunderstorms the prior day had elevated the water level a bit. With more rain forecasted, we chose to enter the canyon below R3. The rooster tail on R4 was a highlight. Lots of uneventful creeking between technical sections. The hallway sequence around R6 didn't align well with the written beta (which I will revise). We ended up doing a two-stage, 75-ish foot rappel off a log, as the 2nd small drop couldn't be safely downclimbed and was too shallow to jump. Due to the lack of fixed hardware and limited natural anchors, this canyon has some mandatory spicy downclimbs (somewhat flow dependent). The R9 flake on canyon right is fractured and loose (same anchor referenced in the below report by RFontaine), so we didn't use it, which made this obstacle particularly thought-provoking for us. We had a hard time imagining how canyoneers could safely descend the "crystal section" of this canyon in high flow conditions.

Comment: A fantastic gorgeous route with high quality rappels and high quality scenery!
We hiked all the way to the tippy top, I couldnt imagine skipping those top 3 raps, they are great, especially the 130'! I didnt see any dangerous rocks as the beta suggests, we didnt have any issues here. Unfortunately, the snow tunnel is all gone. The flow on this route was heavy and pounding, super fun!! The rock was all fairly grippy making movement easy on rope and in creek. We moved quick, knowing there was a chance of rain that day and the potential for flash, also knowing we could easily escape if need be. (as I had to do last time). In the "crystal section" we downclimbed to R9, the V notch rappel. We couldnt find any anchors here and finally slung a rock high DCR I feel this anchor is less than ideal and should be backed up. There are very limited anchor options in this section, would be a good spot for bolts. This sling will likely get washed away next big flash flood... The final rappel is rigged out of the watercourse. Good thing too, the falls here have lots of rocks in the water, some the size of golf balls... 4/3 wetsuit and rain jacket was perfect. A must do route in Ouray, especially if other more committing routes have a chance of rain. 5.5hrs

Comment: Perfect conditions made this a 5* morning. Steep, direct approach. 3/2 with jacket was more than enough. We all agreed R3 was one of the best raps we’d done in the region. Did have some loose rock at the entry so caution is needed. Numerous slippery downclimbs and a fair amount of creek walking. But the real highlights were multiple epic-level snow caves. Much of this past winters big snowfall remains below R3. Amazing experience in the middle of summer!

Comment: This canyon was simply amazing! Interesting geology, lots to see, and super fun big raps!
We did the full route, hiked down at the half way point to look for the old miner’s house only to find remnants. The top portion wasnt as chossy or sketchy as we were led to believe. The big rappel on the top portion was FANTASTIC! Total pounder in the flow! At the bottom was the remains of the ice caves, just the walls but the ceiling had melted away. The rock throughout this canyon was very sticky underfoot, even in the flow! We found this canyon to be a bit colder than others in the area, due to higher elevation. Regardless, I was fine in my 4/3 suit with rain jacket. Lots of beautiful rock throughout, some cool narrows as well. All the raps were very fun in the high flow! It was raining most of the day while we were in the canyon and we kept and eye on water levels as well as escape options as we went. When we got to the 2nd to last rap, the water suddenly turned brown and we knew it was time to get to high ground. We were able to scramble up all the way back up to the hiking trail we came in on that was above us. Looking back, one of the side drainages had began to flow and the canyon had started to flash. Definitely a neat experience and we look forward to returning one day to complete the route! | |||||||

Comment: This is a wonderful canyon with narrow gorges and high water. It also has an ice cave at the start of the technical section. Flow was moderately high, but still ok because all the anchors are set to rappel out of the water (mostly). We built a few new anchors for the scary downclimbs in high water.
