Introduction[edit]

A quick, yet scenic drop into Hartwell canyon featuring a big final rappel and adventurous approach/ exit. Contigo is the shortest and easiest of the 4 routes on the Western Bench.

Approach[edit]

Take the approach gully from the parking pin to enter high above Hartwell canyon from the west. The trail is still developing but in general, stay LUC until the rockfall is reached. Continue up past the rockfall to the top of a small saddle. Enjoy the eastward views of Hartwell before hiking down to the start of Contigo.

Contigo can be accessed via an optional bolted rappel of about 60' on the left or north side of the alcove. Alternatively locate a crack on the right or south side and downclimb into the watercourse.

Descent[edit]

R1 Optional: 60’ off bolts Or locate a crack entrance on the right side of the watercourse.

R2: 85'from a tree on the left.

Downclimb last 15' drop on the left side (crack).

R3: 150’ mostly on wall with a few short free hangs.

Exit[edit]

Connect with the main drainage and follow the wash south to the turnoff for the Art Wall Exit. Take the gully up to a small saddle (400') and back down the other side to the End of Rope Parking.

Red tape[edit]

When exiting, stay in the main drainage. A portion of Hartwell canyon is now private land. Avoid the private property by utilizing the Art Wall Exit.
