Introduction[edit]

Deadman's Hollow is one stunning rappel of 250' into an alcove. With 2 short rappels up to 50' and a brushy exit back to the Deadman's Descent exit trail.

Approach[edit]

Deadman's Hollow is visible from the Boynton Canyon trail. The approach is the same as the approach to Deadman's Descent.

Once along the ridge, instead of continuing to the top of Deadman's Descent, you'll head west, staying low along the edge, from the top of the overlook (34.921652,-111.8424958) to intersect with Deadman's Descent at rappel #3. Follow the slick rock around the nose to the west to a tree right on the edge of the drop, east of the watercourse. There is an upper section that looks like it may have at least two more drops on Google Earth, but it is very brushy and didn't look like it was worth the effort to go up there.

Descent[edit]

Once at the top of the big drop. Backtrack to a tree that is right on the edge of the cliff. Rappel from the webbing approximately 250 ft. (give or take depending on where you get off the rope) to the bottom of the hollow. There is an optional rappel of about 40-50 feet depending on anchor placement. We used a tree back from the edge on canyon left a ways back, which made it about 50 ft. From rappel #2 continue down the wash climbing trough large boulders and brush to get to rappel #3. Rappel #3 is about 45 ft. off a tree in the watercourse.

Rap 1: 250 ft Rap 2: 40-50 ft. Rap 3: 45 ft.

Exit[edit]

Exit by continuing through manzanita and catclaw down canyon until you can find a way over to the Deadman's Descent exit trail.

Exit option 2- avoid catclaw and bushwhacking by exiting through the notch RDC into Boynton after the Big rappel. Either take gully down to Boynton or Traverse over to lower kings cave.
