Introduction

A nice easy canyon with multiple scenic narrows, but a long day.

Approach

Same approach as traditional Fat Man's Misery (West Fork of Misery Canyon), but pass the Misery drainage and continue hiking east along social / game trails, contouring around the ridge that separates the East and West forks.

Descent

Hike and downclimb down canyon through numerous scenic narrows. Some may elect for a partner assist or meat anchor in a few places, though the obstacles are quite small and insignificant.

The first rappel is just prior to the confluence of the East and West forks and is encountered after a series of small chambers that typically hold some water.

R1: 35' from single bolt RDC.

Immediately after the confluence of the two forks is the second rappel.

R2: 30' from bolts RDC, then downclimb next small drop. Or, combine these obstacles for one ~40' rappel...though excessive friction may make for a challenging pull.

Enter a deep, dark, and scenic slot with a warm spring which eventually exits to the Virgin River.

Exit

Hike and wade your way down the East Fork of the Virgin River for 1/3 of a mile. A fairly well-defined social trail will appear on the right and climb steeply up and out of Parunuweap Canyon. Take the network of social trails that meander along the ridge to the west of Fat Man's Misery, eventually connecting with the approach trail.

Red tape

The parking area is located within the Zion National Park boundary in close proximity to the east entrance, but the canyon itself is outside of the park and therefore no permit is required to descend this canyon.
