Introduction[edit]
Garganta del Diablo is an amazingly beautiful canyon near Coroico. The entire way is very narrow with high walls, and a healthy flow of water goes through. There are many small toboggans and rappels along the way. The sunlight filtering in from the top and the jungle vines hanging down make for gorgeous photo opportunities. Tropical birds can often be seen nesting high in the canyon walls, including the bright red Tunki bird of the Andes.
Approach[edit]
From the parking location, a use trail descends down the hillside toward the drainage. It descends fairly steeply down the thickly wooded hillside, and there are a couple points with exposure but usually have small trees to hang onto for protection.
In the 2019 int'l rendezvous, we approached from the other hillside (labeled as Alt Approach), but in 2023 we were told that the trail there is not maintained, and also it's a much longer shuttle.
Descent[edit]
From the start, a narrow and sinewy canyon leads you all the way down to the river. Many rappels, toboggans, and small jumps.
Exit[edit]
As the canyon finishes at the junction with Rio Vagante, turn right and follow the river upstream to reach a large impassable waterfall with a bridge crossing overhead after about 10 minutes. At this bridge are some excellent swimming pools and jumping spots, both directly below the bridge and just upstream of it. This is also a popular locations for locals to come and swim.
An alternative exit, if maybe Rio Vagante is flowing too high, is just before the junction with the Vagante, a small road bridge crosses the end of the canyon high overhead and you can bushwack up the hillside to reach the road here.
Red tape[edit]
Permission required to descend. Please see Coroico region page for more information.
