Introduction[edit]

A long but scenic approach to two fantastic rappels that will land you in the depths of Fay Canyon.

If weather is turning on the Grizzly approach, this could be a quick and safe bail option.

Approach[edit]

Approach[edit]

Start at Bear Mountain trail head and work your way 2.5 miles and 1975ft to the summit and trail end. This scenic yet strenuous hike is only the beginning as you head North along the top ridge, swimming through manzanita along faint game trails laced with Arizona agave.

Work your way towards the center of the ridge as it begins to drop and narrow.

The landmark for the turnoff is a large barkless dead tree with long mangled branches and a small agave at its base. This tree stands on the side of the sheer cliff face on the left of the ridge (opposite Fay Canyon).

Head east into the drainage staying in the left sd until your reach r1 at the base of a Large juniper.

Descent[edit]

r1. 200' into slickrock bowl off tree. watch for crack/notch on edge rdc. stage ropes ldc. 150' free hanging.

      • Throw rope out! There is a large coconino plate hanging on a ledge halfway down.

r2. 170' off tree ldc.

exit rdc.

Exit[edit]

After 2nd Rapp pack up and enjoy the moderate downclimbs to the drainage.

Once you hit the main drainage turn left and head to the base of Haribo, take a break at the ruins and continue adventuring "Golden Gate" route to Boynton Canyon.

Or...

Follow drainage to main wash, take a right into main wash. Take a left at the main trail and return to your exit vehicle at Fay Canyon or Bear Mtn. Trailhead.
