Introduction[edit]
Hole In The Wall Canyon is one of the most popular and accessible canyons out on the Newnes Plateau, it has well-defined entry and exit tracks, making it an easy one to get in and out of. It is simply one of the most stunning and unique canyons out here, so much jam-packed into the two sections.
Being popular, increases the chances of having multiple parties going through at once.
Approach[edit]
It is around 6.5kms from the car park to the creek that flows through HITW canyon. After you reach a big pagoda, the track turns right and down a bit, the exit track comes in on the left from on top of the pagoda, the entry track goes down into the gully to eventually meet the creek.
It can be easier to change into wetsuits here if you wish.
Descent[edit]
There are 5 abseils of varying lengths, with the longest around 15mtrs which is just awesome. So, a 40mtr rope is plenty, a 30mtr might do at a pinch.
The upper section of the canyon is a good introduction for what is about to come in the lower section, just when walking on the sandy creek bed, watch out for liquid sand patches, they can grab you by surprise.
The lower section is where the best stuff is, the abseils, the tunnel swim, glow works, dark, twisting narrow sections, just amazing!
This is very much one of those must-do-canyons!
Exit[edit]
Once you go through the Hole-In-The-Wall and emerge into the Bungleboori North Branch, go left and upstream, wading and swimming until you get to the Big Bend, you will know it. There is a false exit scramble just before the Big Bend on the left, it looks like it goes, it does not, continue to the Big Bend, do one last swim around the bend, and the easy exit gully is now in view.
It is roughly around 7kms back to the carpark from here.

Background[edit]
Bob Sault says: “Hole in the Wall” was indeed Tony Norman’s name for the canyon. Tony named it as we swam past where it meets North Bungleboori in November 1981 – a few days after he submitted his Honours geology thesis. We went back and did it from the top later that season.
