Introduction

A good winter canyon, typically only thigh-waist deep pools, with fairly easy access from the Glow worm tunnel. Please be careful when abseiling into the downstream entrance of the glow worm tunnel, please do not damage a tourist, be polite and smile for photos - if you damage a tourist then the NPWS will be forced to close access to the canyon.

This has been a fairly well-known canyon for many years, having appeared on the internet multiple times, yet, somehow Rick Jamieson missed this in his final 5th edition of the guidebook in 2021.

The highlight of the canyon might be the return walk through the glow worm tunnel.

Approach

A vague footpad can be followed right to the head of the canyon from the highest point of the Pagoda track.

Descent

• The first abseil (tree anchor) is with pretty view but slippery. Drops into 1m deep pool

• The second abseil (bolts) squeezes down through a tight slot. Alternatively bridge across the slot on thin ledges and climb down around corner on left to avoid the squeeze and pool

• The third abseil (bolts) into a pool, or use a guided rappel to avoid the pool

• Continue down creek to Fourth abseil (60m Bolts.) Then make way down to tourist trail. Then left up to tunnel and back to car.

Alternative for shorter ropes (2x 25m) (original exit) When the canyon opens out after the third abseil follow the cliff line around to the left across a landslide section.

• Altenrate fourth abseil (tree anchor) is near the Glowworm Tunnel, where you can see plenty of glowworms inside the tunnel

• Altenrate Keep following cliff line around and walk off near eastern end of tunnel.

Exit

Walk up through the Glow worm tunnel and follow tourist trail back to car.

Red tape

Please do not damage any tourists when abseiling down on to the glow worm tunnel walking track. If you do, the NPWS will be forced to close access to the canyon.
