Introduction[edit]
A beautiful route to experience a bit of Hartwell and Loy Canyons with numerous ruin sites and a fabulous approach. Please respect and preserve the Native American sites and artifacts. A few spots have some spicy 4th class moves to get up on the ridge separating Loy and Hartwell. Great descent down through a few beautiful alcoves.
Approach[edit]
From the road side trail head and parking follow a lightly use trail towards the obvious gully heading up onto the Hartwell side of the ridge. CAUTION major rockfall occurred recently and the normal approach is covered in fresh rockfall. Not all of it is stable. it is passable but unstable. The rockfall can be bypassed via a alternate route shown on the GPS track. There is one exposed 4th class move in the gulley heading up. once you reach the saddle spot the large slick rock slab looking up canyon and lookers left. there is a ruin visible part way up on a slick rock shelf. Go through the ruin until you are forced to climb up. keep going up and slightly to your right. Gain the top of the red slick rock slab and turn back west towards the car park. Follow this level all the way around the nose of the ridge to the Loy side of the ridge. Once on the Loy side walk to the far north point of the slick rock bench and down climb to R1.
Descent[edit]
R1 & R2 are approach rappels
R1:50ft from a webbing slung tree. The rap is overhung part way down.
R2: 100ft from a webbing slung tree. Part way down watch for a small loose tower LDC.
DO NOT go into End of the Rope the obvious slot below you. Follow the GPS track and contour the slick rock bench to the North into the slot of Hung Out to Dry.
R3: 130ft from a webbing slung tree extended out past the agave. This initially drops 30-40 ft to low grade walkable rock which then steepens. Just after it steepens watch for the R4 knot chock.
Down climb LDC or RDC
R4: 125ft from redundant knot chock. One chock is visible with a second hidden beneath it equalized to one point.
R5: 170ft in two drops from tree RDC. Ruins visible LDC at bottom.
Exit[edit]
Head down the drainage for about 200ft then up the next confluence to where you can find a small game trail traversing back towards the car park. Smooth sailin :)
