Introduction[edit]

Jalancha cascades is a surprisingly good canyon finishing up in a local swimming hole with a restaurant. Although it doesn't seem to be much at the start, the rock is very solid and smooth the whole way down, and ultimately the canyon ends in a 80 meter multistage waterfall.

The same guy who gives permission also drives a taxivan, and runs a small restaurant at the end of the canyon with good food. So he can pick you up at your hotel in Coroico, drive you back, and feed you when you're finished.

Approach[edit]

From the end of the road on the GPS, start walking up a road toward the start of the canyon for about a half hour, always going uphill (left) at forks in the trail. Follow the GPS track.

In 2019 the road did not continue as far as it did in 2023, and we parked in a large field at the 'Alt parking' waypoint.

Descent[edit]

The canyon starts with drop after drop, 15 rappels in total back down to the road.

The final large waterfall sequence has an initial rappel from an anchor DCL, down a slot to the next station DCR. From this 2nd station you rappel about 50m down to a 3rd intermediate station DCL. The bolts for the 3rd station are protected on a smooth rock face below hanging grass. This is essentially a hanging rebelay as there is not much to stand on. If you for some reason miss these bolts, there is another anchor (condition unknown) on some rocks about 10m directly below this anchor. Be very careful here with knocking small rocks down as there are usually people swimming in the pool directly below.

Exit[edit]

Finish at the pool. There are some changing rooms next to it. You can walk up to the restaurant and get some food, or just ask the guy to drive you back.

Red tape[edit]

Permission required to descend. Please see Coroico region page for more information.
