"What a delightful shorter DV canyon. We took our time on the approach and in canyon, with breaks and teaching.

Introduction

A good Sunday canyon in polished limestone.

Approach

Park on shoulder of CA-190. Hike north up an obvious wash.

  • Looking toward the canyon approach from beginning of hike
  • Soon you will pass a 1940s car filled with rocks.

At a major fork in the wash, hike up the ridge in the middle. Stay to the right. Once it gets steep, you'll see a dryfall in the drainage on your right. Go just high enough to be over that, then sideslope into the drainage above the dryfall.

Ascend the drainage, which includes some fun, but easy climbs. Eventually the fun part transitions into a more open valley. Continue up to a saddle on right side.

Descend other side of saddle to the canyon.

    Descent

R1 25 feet, plus distance to anchor. Anchor = pinch point under a chockstone.

R2 25 feet, from knot chocks on right.

    Immediately followed by:

R3 50 feet from pinch on right. Drops to hanging pothole, which is R4. The two could be combined for a rappel of about 210 feet.

R4 160 feet from two knot chocks low on right wall of pothole. Drops down solid vertical wall.

    Canyon opens up.

Canyon narrows down again, with nice limestone features.

R5 about 50 feet from cairn anchor, down vertical limestone wall.

R6 about 50 feet of rope length (but only 15 feet vertical), from pinch point in rocks far back from edge.

Junction with Jupiter Canyon (East Fork), aka Big Shit Canyon.

R7 (R10 in Big Shit) 40 feet plus anchor distance, from a pinch point.

R8 (R11 in Big Shit) has several rappel options. Nicest rappel is on left, but we rigged counterbalanced rappel over the end of the ridge, about 30 feet.

    Opens up into a wash.

    Exit

Walk about a mile down the wash back to your vehicle.
