Introduction[edit]

A short route with a beautiful first rappel, scenic approach, easy downclimbs, and a couple spicy starts.

This route holds value as an alternative if for some reason you’re forced to bail on Deadman’s or King’s Cave.

Approach[edit]

From Long Canyon TH, hike 1 mile to the turn-off for Deadman’s Pass. Follow Deadman’s Pass for 0.15 miles, then take the social trail heading northwest towards Earthship Dome. Some class III and IV obstacles may be encountered, but could be avoided if necessary.

Traverse the shelf at the base of the Earthship until the class IV crack used to gain the ridge appears on the left (access climb for Deadman’s Descent, King’s Cave, etc.). Look to the north instead, and drop down to the shelf below. About 300’ ahead is the drainage for Last Resort.

Descent[edit]

R1: 100’ off tree with an aggressive edge/ undercut. Entirely free-hanging.

A 20’ then 10’ downclimb.

R2: 25’ off boulder next to the watercourse.

R3: 50’ off rock pinch RDC. Set back about 20’.

A final 15’ downclimb where the drainages merge. This open section is a good place to gear down.

Exit[edit]

Follow the drainage to its intersection with Long Canyon Trail, staying in the watercourse which is essentially brush-free. Hike 1.5 miles along the main trail back to the parking area.
