Introduction[edit]

This is an extended version of LSA approaching from the East side via Chantry Flats which avoids the Mt. Wilson Trail closure after the Eaton Fire for 2026. This is a shuttle variation: Mt Wilson Trail Park at the bottom and Chantry Flats at the top. Since Chantry Flats parking area fills beyond capacity often (even on Weekdays), you may want to get an Uber or Lyft ride from your exit vehicle up to Chantry Flats.

Approach[edit]

Follow the Chantry Flats Truck Trail up to the first building. Look for the old ridge trail on the backside of the building. Follow that trail through a few quick switchbacks to gain the ridge proper, then climb up (often steeply) 600 vertical feet over 0.6 miles back to the road. Continue to gain elevation on the road traveling SW until you reach a junction and the main ridgeline. There is a big concrete water tank here as you curve around to the right. From here you need to pick which decent line you want to use to drop-in to LSA. The KML file shows 3, with the Northern most explored 9JAN2026.

Descent[edit]

Pick one of the many gullies that descend toward LSA. These gullies start wide, loose and steep, but quickly become downclimbing bedrock (although crumbly in places) and may require rappelling. The Northern most gully had several short downclimbs and 1-3 rappels (depending on your downclimbing comfort zone). There are springs as you get close to where the gullies join together, so expect wet travel in the rainy season. Continue down the main gully with ever increasing waterflow, until you get to a 70 foot rappel which connects to the LSA proper.

Exit[edit]

Follow LSA downstream past a few short downclimbs, bypasses, and one rappel (DCR off a big tree) to the normal LSA starting point at First Water.

Red tape[edit]

Chantry Flats may or may not be open late, depending on night events going on up there. Just be aware that you may find the gate locked if you exit super late.
