"Great little canyon! There is a handline to the base of the first falls/only rappel, so technically this canyon can now be done without a rope... but

Introduction[edit]

A short but incredibly scenic canyon near Vancouver that can be descended rappeling or jumping. Combine with Terepocki Creek for a full day of adventure.

Approach[edit]

A 2WD vehicle can easily reach the trailhead. High clearance is recommended, although a low-clearance vehicle should be fine if you drive slowly on the dirt roads.

From the Approach Parking, descend the well-worn trail switchbacking down to the creek. You need to cross over a side channel and go up and over a small ridge to get to the main creekbed.

Descent[edit]

Entry is via a 3m jump, or downclimb, into a wide pool that is deep in several holes. Pick an entry point into a hole as there are some shallows around the edge of the pool.

The first drop is a 40 foot waterfall into a deep and wide pool ideal for jumping sessions. The anchor bolts are DCL for a shower-y rappel in the flow. Downclimb 2m to a ledge for a 10m jump. Alternately, rappel 5m down to a cave and jump 7m from the cave exit! Once at the bottom, it is very easy to scramble up canyon left to jump off points from 3m, 5m, and 7m. Fantastic jumping practice sessions. This is a very unique opportunity to jump to one's heart content. Alternatively, there is a handline on the lower left of this pool to access it without a rappel.

Next are some fun downclimbs and boulder-hopping aplenty, followed by a couple 5m jumps. As you round a corner left you encounter a logjam that can easily be passed, or climb up and over DCL for a 5m jump into a deep pool. Followed by a long swim through a narrows.

Jumping the second pool.

After some more creek walking you encounter another massive grotto, with several cave like features, a huge roof on the left, more swimming, and another 5m jump. A truly deep canyon with walls 100s of feet high.

There is some very pleasant creek walking on slippery granite for 10 minutes to the exit.

Exit[edit]

Walk the creek until you can see a rocky drainage with the road just a minute uphill on DCL. Walk up this drainage to the road, and follow the road back to your car.

If trying to exit the canyon with an optional shuttle, beware that you will not be able to drive to the "P" marked on the map at the canyon exit because there is a locked gate at the top of the switchbacks. Although a lot of traffic goes through the gate, locals informed us it is private property beyond the gate. It is best to park all vehicles at the top and just walk back up the road.
