Introduction[edit]

A scenic and moderate adventure in the Mother Canyon.

Enjoy 4th class scrambles up sandstone slabs on the approach to the Mushroom rock. Take a break for a quick photo shoot at this iconic formation before gearing up and heading to rap one; or take a short excursion to the sky island for amazing views of Boynton and Long Canyons.

The route starts at a drainage that leads to an ancient waterway. Pass through a Sinaguan dam and follow the water course to four overhanging rappels.

The route finishes with a spectacular 200' rappel that is mostly free hanging. Enjoy the views of a well preserved cliff dwelling nestled on narrow shelf below.

Please respect the remnants of the Sinaguan dam and dwellings site.

Approach[edit]

Approach via Boynton Canyon TH, following well traveled social trails most of the way.

When you get to the point on the approach in the beginning where you are on a wall shaped like a long wave on your right, stay on it, do not veer left into the brush.

Updated approach beta and kml available @ sedonacanyoneering.com

Descent[edit]

All rappels are mostly free hanging and overhung.

  • R1: 150’ over hung, mostly free hanging, RDC off large tree.

continue RDC to slickrock water course.

  • R2: 70' Bolts RDC.

Continue RDC in watercourse, then downclimb to get to R3

  • R3: 40' off tree LDC on edge.
  • R4: 200' off tree. Webbing is extended to the lip. Mostly free hanging. Drop rope straight down, watch for potential hikers below. Pull from LDC & back to avoid abrasion.

Exit[edit]

Follow wash to main trail and return to your vehicle @ Boynton TH.
