Introduction

This is one of the classics in Guara, it's all jumps and tobbogans. This canyon is very popular in summer with guided groups, but since it does not have any bottlenecks, a lot of people can run it at the same time. July and August can get busy, but it's still highly worth doing. Despite not being technical, all canyoneers will have a blast on this one.

  • Peonera Inferior on a 'crowded' August day - no problem!
  • Approach

From the parking area follow the obvious trail west and down. You'll need to make a right onto a smaller trail, with a sign, to continue down the mountain.

From here it's a steep descent for maybe 30 minutes, on a well-travelled trail. Suit up when you get to the water.

    Descent

Enter the water and follow it downstream. For several hours, you'll be ducking and swimming between boulders, with several small optional jumps.

  • Slip and slide through boulders
  • There is one dark feature that looks like it will take you into a dangerous siphon, but upon closer inspection you easily float under a short dim tunnel.

  • This feature looks like a siphon from above.
  • Always check before jumps; every year there are injuries by those who don't check the water.

  • A pretty section
  • A short swim in a slot
  • The canyon will eventually open for a few fun jumps, long swims, and beautiful pools. Then it slots up briefly, in which a jump is the easiest way to get in.

  • One of the stunning pools in the open section
  • Short slot section near the end
  • Here, the canyon portion ends.

    Exit

Follow the stream down, at times with light bushwhacking on a side trail, and exit on an obvious trail on canyon left before the picnic area which will likely be filled with day trippers. It appears that jumping off the dam at the end is no longer allowed.

  • The stream nearing the exit
  • Red tape

    No red tape.
